Not Pairing
Fitbit Fitness Tracker / Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Fitbit device cannot be found or connected by the Fitbit app during setup. This is almost always a Bluetooth issue, a previously paired connection that needs clearing, or a phone permissions problem. Most pairing failures are resolved within a few minutes.
Affected Models
- Fitbit Charge 6
- Fitbit Versa 4
- Fitbit Sense 2
- Fitbit Inspire 3
- Fitbit Luxe
Common Causes
- Bluetooth is off on the phone
- Fitbit is still paired to another phone or the same phone from a previous setup
- Fitbit app lacks Bluetooth or nearby devices permission
- The Fitbit needs to be in pairing mode (some models require a specific step)
- Interference from other Bluetooth devices
How to Fix It
-
Grant Fitbit app Bluetooth and Nearby Devices permissions: phone Settings > Apps > Fitbit > Permissions > enable Bluetooth and Nearby Devices.
On Android 12 and later, apps require a separate 'Nearby Devices' permission for Bluetooth. Without it, Fitbit cannot scan for or connect to the device.
-
Remove the Fitbit from your phone's Bluetooth settings if it appears there.
Fitbit pairing is managed through the Fitbit app, not through the system Bluetooth settings. Unpair it from system Bluetooth to clear the old connection data.
-
Factory reset the Fitbit device: this removes previous pairing data. Check fitbit.com/setup for the reset method for your model.
If the Fitbit was previously paired, it holds a record of its old connection. Resetting it makes it discoverable as a new device.
-
In the Fitbit app, tap 'Set Up a Device' and follow the pairing steps with the Fitbit held within 30 cm of the phone.
Keep both devices close and the Fitbit app open throughout the entire pairing process.
When to Call a Professional
Pairing failures are always software or settings issues. If you cannot pair after following all steps, contact Fitbit Support — they can walk through advanced account and device reset steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Fitbit account to use a Fitbit device?
Yes — a Fitbit account (free) is required to use and set up any Fitbit device. The account stores your health data in the cloud and enables syncing between devices. Create an account at fitbit.com or in the Fitbit app before starting setup.
Can I pair my Fitbit to multiple phones?
Fitbit devices can only be actively paired to one phone at a time. If you switch phones, you need to log in to the Fitbit app on the new phone and re-pair the device. Your Fitbit data follows your account, so nothing is lost when switching phones.
