Sleep Tracking Wrong

Fitbit Fitness Tracker / Smartwatch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Fitbit sleep tracking data is showing the wrong sleep times, inaccurate sleep stages, or completely missing nights. Fitbit detects sleep using movement and heart rate — loose wearing, missing heart rate data, and unusual sleep times are the most common causes of inaccurate sleep data.

Affected Models

  • Fitbit Charge 6
  • Fitbit Versa 4
  • Fitbit Sense 2
  • Fitbit Inspire 3
  • Fitbit Luxe

Common Causes

  • Fitbit band was too loose during sleep
  • Heart rate tracking was off, so sleep stages could not be detected
  • Sleep was at an unusual time (Fitbit uses a default 8pm-8am detection window)
  • Fitbit was removed during sleep
  • Battery died during the night

How to Fix It

  1. Ensure heart rate tracking is enabled: Fitbit app > your device > Heart Rate > On.

Sleep stage detection (REM, Deep, Light) requires heart rate data. Without it, Fitbit can only detect that you were still, not what stage of sleep you were in.

  2. Tighten the band before bed so the Fitbit cannot slide around during sleep.

Movement-based sleep tracking is confused by a loose device. The Fitbit should stay in place when you move your arm.

  3. Set your sleep schedule in the Fitbit app: Health Metrics > Sleep > Sleeping hours to customise the detection window.

If you regularly sleep outside the default detection window (e.g., night shift workers), Fitbit may miss the start or end of sleep.

  4. Charge the Fitbit fully before bed so the battery does not die overnight.

If the Fitbit dies during the night, sleep tracking stops and the rest of the night has no data.

When to Call a Professional

Sleep tracking inaccuracy is always a software or wearing issue. If sleep data is completely absent despite the Fitbit being worn and charged, check that heart rate tracking is enabled and contact Fitbit Support if the problem persists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Fitbit think I was awake when I was asleep?

Fitbit uses a combination of movement and heart rate to decide if you are asleep or awake. If you move a lot in bed, or if your heart rate is elevated during the night (common with some health conditions), Fitbit may mark those periods as restless or awake. This is a limitation of wrist-based consumer sleep tracking — it is not a malfunction.

What sleep data does Fitbit track?

Fitbit tracks total time asleep, sleep efficiency, time in bed, and on heart-rate-enabled models: sleep stages (Light, Deep, REM, and Awake). The app also provides a Sleep Score (0-100) summarising overall sleep quality. Sleep Profiles are available on Premium to compare your patterns over time.
