Battery Draining Fast
Google Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Google Pixel Watch battery is not lasting through the day. The most common causes are the Always-On Display, continuous heart rate monitoring, cellular LTE radio, and apps running in the background. Several settings adjustments can significantly extend battery life.
Affected Models
- Google Pixel Watch 3
- Google Pixel Watch 2
- Google Pixel Watch (1st gen)
Common Causes
- Always-On Display is enabled
- LTE cellular is active when phone is nearby
- Continuous heart rate monitoring
- Too many apps with background refresh enabled
- Screen brightness is too high
- Battery degradation after 2+ years of daily use
How to Fix It
-
Turn off Always-On Display: watch Settings > Display > Always-On Display > Off.
Always-On Display keeps the screen partially active at all times and is the biggest single battery drain on Pixel Watch.
-
Switch from LTE to Bluetooth-only mode when your phone is nearby.
LTE radio uses significantly more power than Bluetooth. In the Pixel Watch app, configure LTE to activate only when your phone is not nearby.
-
Reduce heart rate monitoring frequency in Fitbit app (Pixel Watch uses Fitbit for health): Fitbit > Heart Rate > set to 'Every 10 minutes'.
Continuous heart rate monitoring keeps the optical sensor permanently active. Reducing frequency saves considerable power.
-
Lower screen brightness: watch Settings > Display > Brightness > reduce to 2 or 3.
High screen brightness is a significant drain on the AMOLED display. Most users find mid-level brightness perfectly usable.
-
Limit background apps: in the Pixel Watch app on your phone, disable background activity for apps you do not need to update constantly.
Each app with background refresh permission wakes the watch processor regularly. Restrict this to your most essential apps.
When to Call a Professional
Google Pixel Watch batteries are not user-replaceable. If your watch is more than 2 years old and consistently fails to last a full day despite optimised settings, contact Google Support for a repair or replacement assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should Google Pixel Watch battery last?
Pixel Watch 3 (41mm) is rated for 24 hours with AOD off, and 36 hours in battery-saver mode. Pixel Watch 3 (45mm) is rated for 36 hours with AOD off. Pixel Watch 1 and 2 are rated for around 24 hours. If your watch falls far short of these figures, AOD or LTE is likely consuming excessive power.
Does using Fitbit health tracking drain Pixel Watch battery faster?
Yes — features like continuous heart rate, SpO2 monitoring, and sleep tracking all use power. Reducing monitoring frequency for heart rate (every 10 minutes instead of continuous) and disabling SpO2 monitoring when not needed can meaningfully extend battery life.
