Google Assistant Not Working
Google Smart Watch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Google Assistant on Pixel Watch fails when the watch is offline, the microphone is obstructed, or Google Assistant is not set as the default assistant on the paired phone. Check your internet connection and confirm Assistant is enabled in Pixel Watch settings.
Affected Models
- Google Pixel Watch
- Google Pixel Watch 2
- Google Pixel Watch 3
Common Causes
- Watch not connected to phone or Wi-Fi — Assistant needs internet access
- Google account not signed in on the watch
- Assistant not enabled in Pixel Watch settings
- Microphone blocked by a case or obstruction
- Watch software out of date
- Hey Google detection turned off
How to Fix It
-
Check that the watch has an internet connection.
Swipe down on the watch face to see the status bar. A Wi-Fi or LTE icon should be visible. If the watch is offline, reconnect to your phone via Bluetooth or join a saved Wi-Fi network.
-
Press and hold the crown button to launch Assistant manually.
If voice activation is not working, the crown long-press is the fallback to open Google Assistant directly. If this also fails, the issue is with the Assistant app or account — not the microphone.
-
Enable Hey Google detection on the watch.
On the Pixel Watch go to Settings > Google Assistant > Hey Google Detection and toggle it on. This allows hands-free voice activation of Assistant from the watch face.
-
Sign out and back into your Google account on the watch.
On the watch go to Settings > Google Account and sign out. Then sign back in. This refreshes the authentication token that Assistant uses to make requests on your behalf.
-
Update Pixel Watch software.
On the watch go to Settings > System > System Update. Software updates frequently include fixes for Assistant responsiveness and voice detection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google Assistant on Pixel Watch work without the phone nearby?
Yes — Pixel Watch can use saved Wi-Fi networks or (on LTE models) a cellular connection to reach Google Assistant without the phone.
Why does Assistant say it cannot connect right now?
This message means the watch cannot reach Google's servers. Check your internet connection on both the watch and phone, and try again in a moment.
