Heart Rate Not Working

Google Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The Pixel Watch heart rate sensor is showing dashes, zeros, or readings that seem inaccurate. Optical heart rate sensors work by shining light through your skin — loose fit, dirty sensor, and poor wrist placement are the most common causes of bad readings. This is almost always fixable without any repairs.

Affected Models

  • Google Pixel Watch 3
  • Google Pixel Watch 2
  • Google Pixel Watch (1st gen)

Common Causes

  • Watch band is too loose — sensor loses skin contact
  • Sensor windows on the back of the watch are dirty
  • Watch worn directly over the wrist bone
  • Cold skin temperature reducing blood flow to the surface
  • Heart rate tracking is disabled in Fitbit settings on the watch
  • Excessive movement during measurement

How to Fix It

  1. Tighten the watch band — it should be snug but comfortable, not able to rotate freely.

The optical sensor needs firm, consistent skin contact to work. Any gap between sensor and skin lets light escape and causes unreliable readings.

  2. Wear the watch 1–2 finger widths above the wrist bone.

The wrist bone area has poor blood flow and bony tissue that scatters light. Moving slightly up the forearm gives the sensor better access to skin with good blood flow.

  3. Clean the sensor windows on the back of the watch with a soft damp cloth.

Sunscreen, skin oils, and dried sweat coat the sensor windows and block the green LED light. Clean both the watch and your wrist before wearing.

  4. Enable heart rate monitoring: Fitbit app > your Pixel Watch > Heart Rate > On.

Pixel Watch uses the Fitbit app for health tracking. If heart rate was disabled to save battery, re-enable it.

  5. Restart the Pixel Watch: press and hold the crown until the restart prompt appears.

A sensor service that has crashed or frozen recovers after a restart.

When to Call a Professional

If the heart rate consistently shows zero even when the watch is held firmly against clean, warm skin and a restart has been performed, the optical sensor may have failed. Contact Google Support for a hardware assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Pixel Watch use Fitbit for heart rate tracking?

Yes — Google Pixel Watch integrates with Fitbit for all health and fitness tracking, including heart rate. You need a Fitbit account (or Google account linked to Fitbit) and the Fitbit app to access and configure heart rate settings.

Why does Pixel Watch heart rate seem high during exercise?

During high-intensity exercise, arm movement creates motion artifacts that the sensor misinterprets as a higher heart rate. Tightening the band and wearing the watch slightly higher up the wrist reduces this effect. For the most accurate exercise heart rate, a chest strap is more reliable than any wrist optical sensor.
