Notifications Not Working

Google Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Notifications from your Android phone are not appearing on your Pixel Watch. This is almost always a permissions issue, a Do Not Disturb setting, or a Bluetooth connection problem. All notification issues are software-based and fixable through settings.

Affected Models

  • Google Pixel Watch 3
  • Google Pixel Watch 2
  • Google Pixel Watch (1st gen)

Common Causes

  • Notification access not granted to the Pixel Watch app
  • Do Not Disturb or Focus mode active on phone or watch
  • Per-app notifications disabled in Wear OS settings
  • Watch disconnected from phone
  • Battery optimisation killing the Pixel Watch app in the background

How to Fix It

  1. Grant notification access: phone Settings > Notifications > Device and App Notifications > Pixel Watch > Allow.

Without this permission, the Pixel Watch app cannot read or forward any notifications to the watch.

  2. Check Do Not Disturb: swipe down on the Pixel Watch display and look for the moon icon. Tap to disable DND if active.

Do Not Disturb on either the phone or the watch will block all notifications on the watch.

  3. Enable per-app notifications on the watch: Pixel Watch app on phone > Notifications and enable the specific apps you want.

Wear OS requires each app to be individually enabled for watch notifications. Check that your messaging, email, and other apps are enabled.

  4. Set Pixel Watch app to unrestricted battery: phone Settings > Apps > Pixel Watch > Battery > Unrestricted.

Android battery optimisation can suspend the Pixel Watch app, preventing it from receiving and forwarding notifications.

  5. Reconnect the watch: in the Pixel Watch app, tap the watch and check the connection status. Toggle Bluetooth off and on if disconnected.

No Bluetooth connection means no notifications. A quick toggle of Bluetooth on the phone usually restores the connection.

When to Call a Professional

Notification delivery is entirely software-controlled. If notifications fail persistently after following all steps, contact Google Support for account-level assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some apps send notifications to Pixel Watch but others don't?

Each app must be individually enabled for watch notifications in the Pixel Watch app on your phone. Also, the app must have notification permission on your Android phone. Some apps use silent background notifications that do not display on wearables — this is an app-level design decision.

Can I reply to notifications from Google Pixel Watch?

Yes — Pixel Watch supports voice replies, emoji replies, and pre-written quick replies for many messaging apps on Android. The availability of reply options depends on the specific app. Google Messages, Gmail, and WhatsApp all support replies from the Pixel Watch.
