Screen Not Responsive
Google Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Google Pixel Watch touchscreen is not responding to taps, swipes, or any touch input. This is usually a software freeze, a wet screen, or the watch being in theatre/sleep mode. A force restart almost always resolves an unresponsive Pixel Watch screen.
Affected Models
- Google Pixel Watch 3
- Google Pixel Watch 2
- Google Pixel Watch (1st gen)
Common Causes
- Software crash causing the touch input service to stop responding
- Wet hands or wet screen blocking the capacitive sensor
- Theatre Mode or Sleep Mode disabling the display
- Screen protector reducing touch sensitivity
- Physical damage to the screen
How to Fix It
-
Force restart the Pixel Watch: press and hold the crown button for 10 seconds until the watch restarts.
A software crash that freezes the touch layer is cleared by a force restart. This does not erase any data.
-
Dry your hands and the watch screen before touching.
Pixel Watch uses capacitive touch — water disrupts the electrical field used to detect touches. Dry both completely.
-
Check if Theatre Mode is active: swipe down on the watch (if possible) or press the crown to wake the screen.
Theatre Mode keeps the screen off until you press a button. If it is active, the screen appears unresponsive to wrist raises and taps.
-
Remove any screen protector and test without it.
Thick or poorly fitted screen protectors significantly reduce touch sensitivity on the Pixel Watch AMOLED display.
-
Update Wear OS: if the watch is touchable after a restart, go to Settings > System > System Updates and check for software updates.
Touch responsiveness bugs in specific Wear OS versions are fixed in software updates.
When to Call a Professional
If the screen has visible cracks or the touch fails only in specific areas, the display needs repair. Contact Google Support — screen damage after a drop may or may not be covered depending on your warranty status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a force restart delete my Pixel Watch data?
No — a force restart is equivalent to rebooting a computer. Your apps, health data, watch faces, and settings are all preserved. Only a factory reset (Erase all data) removes your data from the watch.
Why does my Pixel Watch screen light up but not respond to touch?
The display and the touch digitizer are separate layers. If the display turns on (you can see the watch face) but touch does not work, the touch digitizer layer may have failed. This requires a screen replacement at an authorised service centre — it cannot be fixed through software.
