Blood Oxygen Not Working
Samsung Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Samsung Galaxy Watch SpO2 (blood oxygen) sensor is not producing a reading. This feature requires you to be completely still for 15–60 seconds and have the watch sitting snugly on your wrist. It also requires permissions to be granted and the feature to be enabled.
Affected Models
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 6
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
Common Causes
- Feature not enabled in Samsung Health settings
- Moving during measurement — SpO2 requires complete stillness
- Watch band too loose
- Cold skin temperature reducing surface blood flow
- Feature restricted by region due to regulatory approval
- Health permissions not granted
How to Fix It
-
Enable SpO2 monitoring in Samsung Health: open the app on your phone > Manage items > Blood Oxygen > On.
SpO2 monitoring is off by default. You must enable it before measurements can be taken.
-
Sit completely still and rest your arm on a surface while the measurement runs.
SpO2 uses red and infrared light that is extremely sensitive to movement. Even small hand tremors can prevent a valid reading.
-
Tighten the watch band and ensure the sensor is flat against your wrist skin.
Gaps between the sensor and skin cause light leakage that makes the reading impossible. The watch should not be able to rotate on your wrist.
-
Warm your wrist before measuring — cold skin gives poor readings.
In cold temperatures, blood vessels near the skin constrict, reducing the signal the sensor can detect. Warm up indoors before attempting a measurement.
When to Call a Professional
Blood oxygen measurement is a software and sensor feature. If you have enabled it, are sitting still, wearing the watch correctly, and it still consistently fails to read, contact Samsung Support. Note: SpO2 is a wellness feature and should not be used for medical diagnosis — consult a doctor for clinical blood oxygen testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a normal SpO2 reading on Galaxy Watch?
A healthy SpO2 reading is 95–100%. Readings below 90% are considered low and you should seek medical advice. However, Galaxy Watch SpO2 is a wellness indicator — for medical-grade oxygen saturation testing, use a clinical pulse oximeter.
Can I use Galaxy Watch SpO2 to monitor sleep oxygen levels?
Yes — enable 'SpO2 during sleep' in Samsung Health to monitor blood oxygen throughout the night. This can be useful for detecting possible sleep apnoea patterns (periods of low oxygen during sleep). However, this is a screening indicator only — see a doctor if readings are consistently low during sleep.
