GPS Not Working

Samsung Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Samsung Galaxy Watch cannot get a GPS signal or is tracking your workout route inaccurately. GPS acquisition requires a clear outdoor location, a moment to connect to satellites, and location permissions to be granted. Waiting 30–60 seconds outdoors before starting your workout fixes most GPS issues.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Common Causes

  • Watch is indoors or in a location with poor sky view when workout starts
  • Cold start — GPS takes longer to lock on after extended non-use
  • Location permissions not granted to Samsung Health
  • Software bug after a recent Galaxy Watch update
  • GPS antenna obscured (rare — can happen with certain third-party bands)

How to Fix It

  1. Step outside to an open area with a clear view of the sky and wait 30–60 seconds before starting your workout.

GPS satellites are orbiting objects — the watch needs a clear line of sight to several satellites simultaneously. Waiting before you start gives the GPS time to lock.

  2. Grant location permission to Samsung Health on your phone: phone Settings > Apps > Samsung Health > Permissions > Location > Allow all the time.

Samsung Health uses the phone location permission even for watch GPS workouts. Without this, GPS tracking may not work or may be limited.

  3. In Samsung Health on the watch, go to Settings > Workout detection and check GPS usage is set to 'Watch GPS'.

If the workout GPS setting is set to use the phone GPS, the watch will only track location when near the phone.

  4. Update Galaxy Watch software: Galaxy Wearable app > Watch Settings > Watch Software Update.

GPS accuracy and lock speed are improved in software updates. Keeping the watch updated ensures the best GPS performance.

  5. Restart the Galaxy Watch before your workout.

A software glitch in the GPS service can prevent satellite acquisition. A fresh restart clears this.

When to Call a Professional

If GPS consistently fails to lock on even after standing outdoors for 3+ minutes with a clear sky view, the GPS hardware may be damaged. Contact Samsung Support — a hardware GPS fault is uncommon but does occur after drops or water exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Galaxy Watch GPS work without a phone?

Yes — Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and later have a built-in GPS chip that works independently of your phone. You can go for a run without your phone and the watch will record your route. The route will sync to Samsung Health when you reconnect to your phone.

Why is my Galaxy Watch GPS route inaccurate?

GPS accuracy depends on how many satellites the watch can see. In cities with tall buildings, forests, or narrow streets, the signal bounces off surfaces causing inaccurate readings. This is a physical limitation of GPS technology — it is not a fault with your watch.
