NFC Not Working

Samsung Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Samsung Pay or NFC tap-to-pay is not working on your Galaxy Watch. This is usually caused by NFC being disabled on the watch, a card not being set up in Samsung Wallet, or the watch not being held close enough to the payment terminal. Samsung Pay on Galaxy Watch works independently of your phone once cards are added.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Common Causes

  • NFC is turned off in Galaxy Watch settings
  • No payment card added to Samsung Wallet on the watch
  • Samsung Wallet app needs to be installed or updated on the phone
  • Watch is not held close enough or at the right angle to the terminal
  • Payment terminal does not support the NFC standard used
  • Bank or card issuer has not approved the card for Samsung Pay

How to Fix It

  1. Enable NFC on the watch: Settings > Connections > NFC > On.

NFC can be toggled off to save battery. Make sure it is enabled before attempting a payment.

  2. Open Samsung Wallet on your phone and add a payment card to the watch specifically.

Adding a card to Samsung Wallet on your phone does not automatically add it to your watch. In Samsung Wallet, go to the watch section and add your card there separately.

  3. At the payment terminal, double-press the Home button to launch Samsung Pay, then hold the watch flat against the terminal.

The NFC antenna is on the back of the watch case. Hold the back of the watch flat against the payment terminal's tap area — within 1–2 cm.

  4. Update Samsung Wallet and Galaxy Wearable apps to the latest versions.

Payment app updates often include fixes for NFC compatibility with newer payment terminals.

When to Call a Professional

If NFC does not work for any function (not just payments) even after enabling it and testing with an NFC tag, the NFC hardware may have failed. NFC chips can be damaged by strong magnetic fields or physical impacts. Contact Samsung Support for a hardware assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Samsung Pay on Galaxy Watch need my phone to be nearby?

No — once cards are set up on the watch, Samsung Pay works completely independently without your phone. You can leave your phone at home and still pay at NFC terminals using only the Galaxy Watch.

Why does the payment terminal say 'Card not read' when I tap with Galaxy Watch?

Either the NFC on the watch is off, the card was not properly added to the watch, or the terminal's tap area was not aligned with the watch's NFC antenna. Try holding the watch closer and flatter to the terminal. Some older terminals do not support the NFC standard Samsung Watch uses — in this case, try a different terminal or pay with your card directly.
