Screen Not Turning On

Samsung Smartwatch

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Samsung Galaxy Watch display stays dark and will not respond when you raise your wrist or press the home button. This is most often caused by a completely drained battery, Wake-Up Gesture being disabled, or a software crash. Charging the watch or a force restart usually resolves it.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Common Causes

  • Battery has completely discharged
  • Wake-Up Gesture (tilt-to-wake) is disabled in settings
  • Always-On Display was turned off and wrist gesture not working
  • Software crash causing the display driver to stop responding
  • Screen brightness set too low in bright conditions
  • Physical screen damage

How to Fix It

  1. Place the Galaxy Watch on its charger and wait 5–10 minutes.

A completely dead battery will show no display at all. The charging screen appears only after a minimum charge threshold is reached.

  2. Press the Home button (the side button on the watch) to force wake the screen.

If the wrist gesture is not working, pressing the physical Home button should always wake the screen when the watch is powered on.

  3. Force restart: press and hold the Home button and the Back button simultaneously for 7 seconds.

This force reboots the Galaxy Watch without erasing data. It clears software crashes that prevent the display from turning on.

  4. Enable Wake-Up Gesture: on the watch go to Settings > Display > Wake-Up Gesture > On.

If this was accidentally turned off, raising your wrist will no longer wake the watch. Enabling it restores tilt-to-wake behaviour.

When to Call a Professional

If the watch makes sounds or vibrates for notifications but the screen stays black, the display hardware has likely failed. Samsung authorised service centres can replace the display. If covered by Samsung Care+, screen replacement costs may be reduced or waived.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Galaxy Watch vibrate but the screen stays black?

This is a strong sign the display hardware has failed while the processor still works. The watch can still receive notifications and vibrate, but the AMOLED screen is not functioning. This requires a screen replacement at a Samsung service centre.

How do I force restart Galaxy Watch if the buttons are not responding?

If neither button works, place the watch on its charger. Some Galaxy Watch models will automatically restart when connected to a charger if the battery was fully dead. If there is still no response after 15 minutes on the charger, the watch needs professional service.
