Update Failed

Samsung Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The Galaxy Watch software update failed to download or install. This is usually caused by low battery, the watch losing Bluetooth connection to your phone during the update, or insufficient phone storage. Retrying after charging and reconnecting fixes most failures.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

Common Causes

  • Galaxy Watch battery below 50% when update started
  • Bluetooth disconnected mid-update
  • Phone ran out of storage space to download the update package
  • Galaxy Wearable app or Samsung Health app needs updating first
  • Temporary Samsung server issues during download

How to Fix It

  1. Charge the Galaxy Watch to at least 50% and keep it on the charger during the update.

Samsung requires a minimum battery level before it will allow updates to begin. If the watch is below 50%, the update will not start.

  2. Keep phone and watch within Bluetooth range (within 5 metres) throughout the entire update.

The update package downloads to your phone first, then transfers to the watch over Bluetooth. Disconnecting mid-transfer causes the update to fail.

  3. Free up storage on your phone — ensure at least 1 GB is available.

Galaxy Watch updates (up to several hundred MB) download to your phone first. If your phone is full, the download fails before it even starts.

  4. Update the Galaxy Wearable app and Samsung Health app first, then retry the watch update.

Watch software updates sometimes require a newer version of the Galaxy Wearable app to install correctly.

  5. Restart both devices and retry the update from Galaxy Wearable > Watch Settings > Watch Software Update.

Clearing the app state with a restart often resolves stuck or failed update processes.

When to Call a Professional

If the watch is stuck in an update loop and will not boot normally, a service centre can flash the firmware directly using Samsung's diagnostic tools. Contact Samsung Support before attempting any unofficial recovery methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Galaxy Watch software update take?

Downloading the update to your phone takes 5–20 minutes depending on your internet speed. Transferring to the watch and installing takes another 15–30 minutes. Do not use your phone heavily or move out of Bluetooth range during this time.

What happens if Galaxy Watch update is interrupted?

If interrupted during download, the process simply fails and you can retry safely. If interrupted during installation on the watch, the watch may revert to the previous firmware or show an error. In most cases, retrying from the Galaxy Wearable app is all that is needed.
