Error Code 72

Adobe Adobe Software

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 72 means Creative Cloud could not complete an installation or update because it was denied permission to write to a folder on your computer. This is a file system permissions problem. Creative Cloud needs to write files to specific system folders, and something is blocking that access. This is almost always fixable by adjusting folder permissions.

Affected Models

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App
  • All Creative Cloud applications on Windows and macOS

Common Causes

  • The Adobe installation folder has incorrect permissions
  • Your Windows user account lacks administrator rights
  • A third-party security tool or endpoint protection software is blocking Adobe's writes
  • A previous failed installation left the folder in a locked state
  • Group Policy settings on a managed computer restrict software installation

How to Fix It

  1. Run the Creative Cloud installer as an administrator. Close the Creative Cloud app, right-click it in the Start menu or taskbar, and choose 'Run as administrator'. Try installing or updating again.

Administrator rights are required to write to the Program Files folder where Adobe apps are installed.

  2. Fix the permissions on the Adobe folder. On Windows, navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe. Right-click the folder, go to Properties > Security. Click Edit and make sure your user account (or 'Users') has Full Control.

If Full Control is greyed out, click Advanced and take ownership of the folder first.

  3. Download and run the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Select the specific app that is failing to install. Run the clean, then try installing fresh from the Creative Cloud app.

A partial previous install can leave the target folder in a state that blocks new installs.

  4. Temporarily disable third-party security software — endpoint protection, antivirus, or firewalls. Try the installation. If it succeeds, add Adobe's installation path to the security software's exclusion list.

Enterprise security tools like Symantec Endpoint or CrowdStrike are frequent causes of Error 72.

  5. If on Windows, run the Windows Installer troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters and look for 'Program Compatibility Troubleshooter'.

The Windows Installer service sometimes gets into a stuck state that causes permission errors across many applications.

When to Call a Professional

If this is a company computer and Group Policy is preventing the fix, your IT administrator needs to grant the necessary permissions. Do not attempt to change Group Policy settings on a work machine without IT authorization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Error 72 appeared after a Windows update. Is that related?

Yes, very possibly. Some Windows updates reset folder permissions or change UAC (User Account Control) settings. This can retroactively break Adobe's access to its own installation folders. Fixing the permissions as described above resolves it.

I am the only user and administrator on my PC — why am I getting permissions errors?

Being an administrator does not mean applications run with admin rights by default. Windows uses UAC, which limits what applications can do unless you explicitly run them as administrator. Right-clicking and choosing 'Run as administrator' provides the elevated rights the installer needs.

Does Error 72 mean my Creative Cloud subscription is cancelled?

No. Error 72 is purely a local software installation problem. Your subscription, account, and payment are completely unaffected. You can still access Adobe's online tools at adobe.com.
