Error Code 81

Adobe Adobe Software

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 81 in Creative Cloud means an app update failed partway through. The app was being updated to a new version, but the process did not complete. This can leave an app in an unusable state. The fix almost always involves either retrying the update or using the Cleaner Tool to get a fresh start.

Affected Models

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App
  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere Pro
  • After Effects
  • All Creative Cloud applications

Common Causes

  • The internet connection dropped or slowed down during the update download
  • The update installer did not have enough disk space to complete
  • A background process (antivirus or another updater) interfered with the installation
  • The existing app installation was corrupted before the update began
  • A previous update attempt failed and left partial files that block a retry

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Creative Cloud desktop app and go to the Updates tab. Click 'Retry' next to the failed update. Sometimes a simple retry on a stable connection is all it takes.

Make sure your internet connection is stable before retrying. A wired connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi for large downloads.

  2. Check available disk space. Go to This PC (Windows) or Finder > Locations (Mac) and check the drive where Adobe apps are installed. Make sure you have at least 10 GB free.

A Photoshop update alone can be 2–4 GB. Creative Cloud needs working space on top of that.

  3. Uninstall the affected app from Creative Cloud, then reinstall it. In the Creative Cloud app, find the app that failed, click the three dots, and select 'Uninstall'. Then click 'Install'.

A clean install avoids the problem of partial update files conflicting with each other.

  4. Download and run the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Select only the affected app (not all apps) and clean it. Then reinstall from the Creative Cloud desktop app.

The Cleaner Tool removes all traces of the failed install so the new install has no conflicts.

  5. Temporarily disable antivirus and security tools, then retry the update. After the update completes, re-enable your security software.

Antivirus tools frequently interrupt large software installations by scanning files as they are written.

When to Call a Professional

If the app is completely broken after this error and you cannot reinstall it, Adobe Support can walk you through an advanced clean uninstall and reinstall. This is free for all Creative Cloud subscribers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I skip the failed update and keep using the old version?

In some cases yes. If the app still launches and works, you can ignore the update temporarily. But eventually Creative Cloud will keep pushing the update. It is better to resolve the error properly rather than leaving it unfinished.

How do I know which app the Error 81 is for?

Open the Creative Cloud desktop app and click the Updates tab or the Activity panel. It will show which app triggered the error. The name is usually visible in the error notification too.

Does uninstalling and reinstalling delete my project files?

No. Adobe applications and your project files are stored in completely different places. Uninstalling Photoshop will not delete your .psd files. Your work is safe throughout this process.
