Photoshop Program Error
Adobe Adobe Software
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
This Photoshop error means the app ran into an unexpected internal problem and could not finish what you asked it to do. It can happen when saving, opening, or applying a filter. It does not mean your file is destroyed — but it does need fixing before you can continue.
Affected Models
- Adobe Photoshop CC
- Adobe Photoshop CS6
- Adobe Photoshop 2022
- Adobe Photoshop 2023
- Adobe Photoshop 2024
Common Causes
- A corrupted or damaged Photoshop preferences file
- A third-party plugin that is incompatible with your current version
- Not enough RAM or scratch disk space for the operation
- A corrupted font that Photoshop is trying to use
- A graphics driver that is outdated or conflicts with GPU acceleration
How to Fix It
-
Reset Photoshop preferences. Hold Alt+Ctrl+Shift (Windows) or Option+Cmd+Shift (Mac) while Photoshop is launching. Click 'Yes' when asked to delete preferences.
A corrupted preferences file is the most common cause of this error. Resetting it fixes the problem in most cases.
-
Open Photoshop in Safe Mode by holding Shift while launching. If the error goes away, a plugin is likely the culprit.
Safe Mode disables all third-party plugins. If it works in Safe Mode, re-enable plugins one at a time to find the bad one.
-
Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance. Turn off 'Use Graphics Processor' and try your task again.
If disabling GPU acceleration fixes the error, update your graphics card driver from the manufacturer's website.
-
Go to Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks. Make sure you have at least a few gigabytes of free space on the selected drive.
Photoshop needs scratch disk space to work. If the drive is almost full, it can trigger this error.
-
Uninstall and reinstall Photoshop using the Creative Cloud desktop app. Make sure to install the latest version.
If nothing else works, a clean reinstall clears any corrupted program files.
When to Call a Professional
If the error happens every time you open a specific file, the file itself may be corrupted. A data recovery specialist may be able to help recover it. For persistent crashes affecting your whole workflow, Adobe support can remote in and diagnose deeper issues.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my work when this error appears?
Not necessarily. Photoshop usually keeps your file open even after an error. Try saving immediately as a different filename using File > Save As. If the file will not save at all, look for an auto-recovery file in Edit > Preferences > File Handling.
Does resetting preferences delete my saved actions and brushes?
Preferences are reset, but your custom brushes, actions, and presets are stored separately. They will not be deleted. However, any custom keyboard shortcuts or workspace layouts will be reset to defaults.
Why does this error only happen with certain files?
Some files contain elements Photoshop struggles with — such as very large canvases, unusual color profiles, or embedded data from older versions. Try flattening the image (Layer > Flatten Image) or converting it to a different color mode.
