Media Pending

Adobe Adobe Software

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Media Pending means Premiere Pro is still processing a clip and it is not ready to play yet. This usually shows up as a red or pink bar over clips in the timeline, or a message in the Program Monitor. It is often temporary — Premiere is working in the background to generate previews or conform the audio. However, sometimes it gets stuck and needs manual help.

Affected Models

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CC
  • Adobe Premiere Pro 2022
  • Adobe Premiere Pro 2023
  • Adobe Premiere Pro 2024

Common Causes

  • Premiere is conforming audio (converting it to its internal format) and has not finished yet
  • Peak files for audio are being generated in the background
  • The media cache is corrupted and the conforming process is stuck
  • The clip's source file has moved, been renamed, or is on a drive that is offline
  • Premiere is generating video preview files and has not completed the task

How to Fix It

  1. Wait a few minutes. If you just added new clips, Premiere is likely conforming them in the background. The 'Media Pending' label should disappear on its own.

Large video files or files with high-quality audio can take several minutes to conform.

  2. If it is stuck, clear the media cache. Go to Edit > Preferences > Media Cache. Click 'Delete' next to 'Delete Media Cache Files'. Restart Premiere.

This forces Premiere to rebuild the cache files from scratch. The conforming will restart and should complete properly.

  3. Check that all source clips are still in their original locations. Click on the problem clip in the Project panel. If there is a question mark icon, the file has been moved. Right-click it and choose 'Link Media' to re-link it.

Premiere cannot process a clip it cannot find.

  4. Make sure the drive containing your media is connected and not asleep. External hard drives that go into a sleep mode can temporarily show clips as pending.

On Windows, adjust your power settings so external drives do not sleep while you are working.

  5. Render the In to Out. Set In and Out points around the affected clips, then go to Sequence > Render In to Out. This forces Premiere to process the clips immediately.

Press Enter to render the full timeline, or use Sequence > Render In to Out for just the selected section.

When to Call a Professional

Media Pending is generally not a serious issue. If clips stay stuck for hours and none of the fixes work, Adobe's community forums or support team can assist. This rarely requires paid professional help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does 'Media Pending' appear every time I open Premiere?

If it appears every session on the same clips, your media cache folder may be in a location that gets cleared between sessions. Check that your cache folder (Edit > Preferences > Media Cache) points to a stable folder on your main drive.

Does Media Pending affect my final export?

It can. If Premiere has not finished conforming a clip and you export, the audio or video quality on that clip may not be optimal. Wait for conforming to finish before exporting important projects.

How do I speed up the conforming process?

Close other applications to free up CPU and RAM. Make sure your media cache is on a fast drive (an SSD is ideal). You can also reduce the number of clips Premiere needs to conform by removing clips from the project that you are not using.
