Prime Video Buffering

Amazon Streaming & Shopping

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Amazon Prime Video buffering means your device cannot receive video data fast enough to keep playback smooth. The player pauses to download more data before it can continue playing. This is most commonly caused by a slow internet connection, a weak Wi-Fi signal, or too many devices sharing your bandwidth. Lowering the video quality and switching from Wi-Fi to a wired connection are the two fastest fixes.

Affected Models

  • Amazon Prime Video Web
  • Amazon Prime Video Android
  • Amazon Prime Video iOS
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Amazon Fire Stick

Common Causes

  • Your internet connection speed is too slow to sustain the selected video quality
  • Your Wi-Fi signal is weak or suffering from interference, causing frequent packet loss
  • Multiple devices are consuming bandwidth on your network simultaneously
  • Amazon's servers are experiencing high demand and serving content at reduced speeds
  • Your device's storage or memory is nearly full, slowing down the buffering process

How to Fix It

  1. Lower the video quality. In Prime Video, tap the screen during playback > Settings (gear icon) > Stream Quality > choose Good or Better instead of Best.

'Best' quality requires 15+ Mbps. 'Better' (HD) requires about 5 Mbps. 'Good' (SD) works on 1–2 Mbps.

  2. Run a speed test at speedtest.net. If your download speed is below 5 Mbps, your connection is too slow for HD streaming. Contact your ISP or upgrade your plan.

Also check your ping and jitter values. A low-speed but stable connection buffers less than a fast but unstable one.

  3. Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection. A stable wired connection eliminates the packet loss and signal drops that cause buffering on Wi-Fi.

If your device does not have an Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter works on Fire TV Stick and many Android devices.

  4. Restart your modem and router. Unplug both for 30 seconds, then plug in the modem first and wait for it to connect before plugging in the router.

Routers benefit from regular restarts to flush their routing tables and connection memory.

  5. Close other apps and devices using the internet. Pause any downloads, close other streaming tabs, and ask others in your household to temporarily reduce their streaming activity.

Each HD stream uses 5–15 Mbps. Multiple simultaneous streams quickly saturate most home internet connections.

  6. Clear the Prime Video app cache. On Android: Settings > Apps > Prime Video > Storage > Clear Cache. On Fire TV: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Prime Video > Clear Cache.

A corrupt app cache can slow down video buffering even on a fast connection.

When to Call a Professional

Prime Video buffering is a network or settings issue that you can fix yourself. No professional help is needed. If buffering affects all streaming services simultaneously on all your devices, contact your ISP about connection speed or line quality. If only Prime Video buffers and other services are fine, the issue may be specific to Amazon's CDN servers in your region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Prime Video buffer more than Netflix on the same connection?

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video use different CDN (Content Delivery Network) providers and compression algorithms. Depending on your location, one service's CDN servers may be closer or better connected to your ISP than the other's. This means real-world performance can differ significantly between services even at the same resolution. If Prime Video consistently buffers while Netflix does not, try switching Prime Video's quality to 'Better' (720p) to reduce bandwidth demand.

Can I download Prime Video content to avoid buffering?

Yes — Prime Video allows you to download titles for offline viewing on the mobile app and Fire devices. Open the title in the Prime Video app, look for the download icon, and tap it. Downloaded content plays without any internet connection or buffering. Downloads are stored on your device for a limited time (typically 30 days) before they expire.

Does Prime Video quality improve automatically when my connection gets faster?

Yes — if you have Stream Quality set to 'Auto' (or 'Best'), Prime Video adjusts quality in real time based on your available bandwidth. When your connection improves, quality goes up; when it slows down, quality drops to prevent buffering. If you want consistent quality without auto-adjustments, manually select your preferred quality level in the stream settings.
