Authorization Error
Apple Music Apple Music
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Apple Music shows an Authorization Error when your computer isn't linked to your Apple ID. Apple limits music to 5 authorized computers per account. Authorizing your computer through the Music app fixes it in minutes.
Affected Models
- Apple Music on Mac
- Apple Music on Windows
- Apple Music on PC via iTunes
Common Causes
- Computer was never authorized for this Apple ID
- Exceeded the 5-device authorization limit
- Apple ID was recently changed
- Hard drive replaced or major system change reset authorization
- Music app was re-installed, clearing previous authorization
How to Fix It
-
Open the Music app on your Mac (or iTunes on Windows), click Account in the menu bar, and select Authorize This Computer.
This is the most common fix — the computer simply wasn't authorized yet.
-
Enter your Apple ID email and password, then click Authorize.
Use the Apple ID that owns the music or subscription you want to play.
-
If you see a '5 computers already authorized' message, go to account.apple.com, sign in, then click Manage Devices > Deauthorize All.
This clears all 5 slots so you can start fresh.
-
After deauthorizing all, wait a few minutes, then re-authorize this computer: Music app > Account > Authorize This Computer.
You can only use the Deauthorize All option once every 12 months.
-
If the Deauthorize All option is greyed out or unavailable, contact Apple Support — they can manually remove a device from your account.
Visit support.apple.com or call Apple Support directly.
