Family Sharing Not Working

Apple Music Apple Music

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Apple Music Family Sharing fails when a family member isn't added to the group or the organizer's payment fails. Each member must accept the invitation on their own device. The organizer controls the plan — their Apple ID and payment must be valid.

Affected Models

  • Apple Music on iPhone
  • Apple Music on iPad
  • Apple Music on Mac
  • Apple Music family plan

Common Causes

  • Family member not added to the Family Sharing group
  • Family organizer's payment method has failed
  • Family member signed in with the wrong Apple ID
  • Family Sharing invitation not accepted by the member
  • More than 6 members attempted — Apple's limit is 6

How to Fix It

  1. Family organizer: go to Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing to see all current members.

Anyone not listed there won't have access to the Apple Music plan.

  2. To invite a missing family member, tap Add Member in the Family Sharing screen and follow the prompts.

The invited person will receive an invitation on their device that they must accept.

  3. Check the organizer's payment method is valid: Settings > [Your Name] > Payment & Shipping.

If the payment fails, Apple Music access is suspended for the entire family group.

  4. Each family member must accept their invitation on their own device before access is granted.

The invitation appears as a notification or in Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing.

  5. Confirm every family member is signed in with their own Apple ID — not sharing one account.

Each person needs a separate Apple ID. Sharing one account causes conflicts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can share Apple Music on a Family plan?

Apple Music Family plan supports up to 6 people. That includes the account organizer plus 5 additional family members.

Can each family member have a separate music library?

Yes. Each person has their own Apple ID, their own iCloud Music Library, and their own listening history. Family Sharing only shares the subscription cost — not the music libraries.

What happens if the family organizer cancels Apple Music?

All family members immediately lose access to Apple Music. Previously downloaded songs become unplayable until a new subscription is active.
