Library Not Syncing

Apple Music Music Streaming App

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Apple Music uses iCloud Music Library to keep your songs in sync across devices. If it stops syncing, the feature may have been turned off or your account hit a limit. This is almost always fixable without losing your music.

Affected Models

  • Apple Music on iPhone
  • Apple Music on iPad
  • Apple Music on Mac
  • Apple Music on Android

Common Causes

  • iCloud Music Library is turned off on one or more devices
  • Your Apple ID is signed in to different accounts on different devices
  • Poor internet connection preventing the sync from completing
  • Apple Music subscription lapsed, pausing sync
  • Apple's iCloud servers are experiencing a temporary outage

How to Fix It

  1. Make sure iCloud Music Library is turned on.

On iPhone: go to Settings > Music > turn on Sync Library. On Mac: open Music app > Music menu > Preferences > General > check Sync Library.

  2. Confirm you are signed in with the same Apple ID on all devices.

Go to Settings > your name on each device and check the email address shown. All devices must use the exact same Apple ID.

  3. Check your internet connection on the device that is out of sync.

Sync requires a working internet connection. Try opening a website to confirm your Wi-Fi or data is working.

  4. Force-close the Music app and wait five minutes.

Sometimes the sync is just slow. Close the app, wait a few minutes, then reopen it and pull down to refresh your library.

  5. Turn Sync Library off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

This resets the sync connection. Go to Settings > Music on your iPhone and toggle Sync Library off and back on.

When to Call a Professional

If your library shows completely different songs on different devices and nothing fixes it, contact Apple Support. They can check your iCloud account health and manually trigger a re-sync.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off iCloud Music Library delete my songs?

No — your songs stay on each device individually. But any changes you make won't carry over to other devices until you turn sync back on.

How long does Apple Music library sync take?

A small library syncs in minutes. A very large library with thousands of songs can take several hours on the first sync.

My added songs show on my iPhone but not my Mac — why?

The Mac version of the Music app may have Sync Library disabled. Open Music on Mac, go to Preferences > General, and make sure Sync Library is checked.
