Shuffle Not Working

Apple Music Apple Music

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Apple Music shuffle feels broken when you're playing a small playlist or shuffle is accidentally turned off. Autoplay can also interfere by adding extra songs from outside your playlist. Toggling shuffle off and on again usually resets it.

Affected Models

  • Apple Music on iPhone
  • Apple Music on iPad
  • Apple Music on Mac
  • Apple Music on Apple Watch

Common Causes

  • Shuffle is turned off — button not active
  • Playing from a small playlist — too few songs to feel random
  • Autoplay (infinity symbol) is adding outside songs and muddying the shuffle
  • iOS or macOS bug with the shuffle algorithm
  • Shuffle mode was reset after an app update

How to Fix It

  1. Check that the Shuffle button is highlighted — tap it to make sure shuffle is actively on.

On iPhone, the shuffle button is on the Now Playing screen. It's highlighted when active.

  2. Play from a larger playlist — shuffle works best with 20 or more songs.

With only 5 or 10 songs, repeats will happen frequently and it won't feel random.

  3. Tap the Shuffle button twice — once to turn it off, then again to turn it back on.

This resets the shuffle queue and generates a new random order.

  4. Turn off Autoplay by tapping the infinity symbol on the Now Playing screen.

Autoplay adds songs from outside your playlist, which can make shuffle feel inconsistent.

  5. Update to the latest iOS, iPadOS, or macOS version, then restart the Music app.

Go to Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone or iPad.

When to Call a Professional

This is a minor app behavior issue. No professional is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Apple Music play the same song first every time I shuffle?

This is a known quirk — Apple Music sometimes anchors the first song in a shuffle. Toggling shuffle off and on again, then skipping the first track, usually breaks the pattern.

Is Apple Music shuffle truly random?

It uses a pseudo-random algorithm, which means it avoids playing the same song twice in a row. True randomness would sometimes repeat songs back-to-back, so Apple's version feels 'more random' but isn't fully random.

Where is the shuffle button on iPhone in Apple Music?

Open a song to the full Now Playing screen, then swipe up to reveal the queue and playback controls. The Shuffle button (two crossing arrows) appears there along with the Repeat button.
