Failed to Load App

Discord Discord

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The Discord 'Failed to load app' error means Discord's app data or cache has become corrupted, preventing the app from starting properly. You usually see a blank white or dark screen with an error message, or Discord gets stuck on the loading screen. This is not an account issue — your account is fine. Clearing Discord's cache folder fixes this in the majority of cases.

Affected Models

  • Discord on Windows
  • Discord on macOS

Common Causes

  • Discord's local app cache is corrupted after a failed update or interrupted installation
  • The Discord app was not closed properly and left behind locked or damaged temporary files
  • A Windows or macOS update changed system permissions, breaking Discord's access to its cache folder
  • Discord's app data folder is full or contains conflicting old versions of app files
  • An antivirus or security tool is blocking Discord from reading its own files

How to Fix It

  1. Fully close Discord. Right-click the Discord icon in your system tray (bottom-right of the taskbar) and click Quit Discord. Make sure it is not running in the background.

Discord must be completely closed before you delete its cache. If it is still running, the files will be locked.

  2. On Windows: Press Win+R, type %appdata%/discord and press Enter. Delete the folders named 'Cache', 'Code Cache', and 'GPUCache'. Then reopen Discord.

These folders hold temporary files that Discord recreates automatically. Deleting them forces a clean reload of the app.

  3. On macOS: Open Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G, and go to ~/Library/Application Support/discord. Delete the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders. Then reopen Discord.

The steps are the same as Windows — you are deleting the same cache folders, just in a different location.

  4. If clearing the cache does not fix it, uninstall Discord completely and reinstall the latest version from discord.com. On Windows, also delete the remaining %appdata%/discord folder after uninstalling.

The standard Windows uninstaller leaves app data behind. Deleting the appdata folder ensures you get a truly clean install.

  5. Check your antivirus or security software. Look in its quarantine for any Discord files it may have removed. Add Discord's install folder and AppData folder to the antivirus exclusions list.

Security tools sometimes block files inside Discord's app bundle, especially after updates, which prevents the app from loading.

When to Call a Professional

Failed to Load is a local software issue with no hardware involved. You can fix it yourself by clearing the cache or reinstalling. Your account data, servers, and messages are stored on Discord's servers — none of that is lost by clearing the local cache.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will clearing the Discord cache delete my messages or servers?

No. Your messages, servers, friends, and settings are all stored on Discord's servers — not on your PC. The local cache only stores temporary files to speed up loading. Deleting the cache is completely safe for your account data.

Discord worked fine yesterday. Why did it suddenly fail to load today?

Discord updates itself automatically in the background. If an update was interrupted — for example, your PC lost power or you force-quit Discord during an update — the app data can end up in a broken half-updated state. Clearing the cache removes the broken files and lets Discord complete a fresh install of its app data.

Discord still fails to load after reinstalling. What do I do?

After uninstalling, make sure you also manually delete %appdata%/Discord (on Windows) or ~/Library/Application Support/discord (on Mac). A reinstall that skips this step leaves the corrupted data in place. If the error still persists after a clean reinstall, Discord's own support team can help at support.discord.com.
