High Ping

Discord Discord

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

High ping on Discord means there is a delay between your device and Discord's voice servers. Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms) — the lower the number, the better. Under 100ms is excellent. 100 to 200ms is acceptable. Above 200ms causes noticeable voice lag, echo, and choppy audio. High ping is almost always caused by a slow or busy internet connection, a poor Wi-Fi signal, or Discord routing your voice through a far-away server.

Affected Models

  • Discord on Windows
  • Discord on macOS
  • Discord in Browser
  • Discord on Linux
  • Discord on iOS
  • Discord on Android

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi signal is weak or congested — your device is too far from the router or on a busy 2.4GHz channel
  • Your internet plan does not have enough upload speed for stable voice communication (1 Mbps upload minimum for Discord)
  • Discord is routing your voice connection to a server far from your physical location
  • Background applications or downloads are consuming your bandwidth during voice calls
  • Your router's QoS (Quality of Service) settings are not prioritizing real-time voice traffic

How to Fix It

  1. Check your current ping in Discord. During a voice call, you can see your ping in the voice panel (bottom-left of Discord desktop app, where it shows a signal icon). Also run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net to check your overall internet speed and ping.

If your speed test ping is low (under 20ms) but Discord ping is high, the issue is specific to Discord's routing — not your overall internet quality.

  2. Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired ethernet connection. Wi-Fi is shared with every other device on your network and can vary significantly in latency. A wired connection is more stable and typically cuts ping by 20 to 50ms.

Even a short Cat5e or Cat6 ethernet cable run from your router to your computer makes a significant difference for voice call quality.

  3. Change the voice server region in Discord. If the voice channel you use allows it (server admins can set this), switch to a region geographically closer to you. Right-click the voice channel > Edit Channel > Region Override > select your nearest region.

Discord defaults to automatic server selection, but sometimes it picks a suboptimal region. Manually selecting your nearest region can dramatically reduce ping.

  4. Close any background apps that are downloading or streaming during your voice call. Windows Update, Steam downloads, cloud backup software (Dropbox, OneDrive), and video streaming all consume upload and download bandwidth that voice needs.

Discord voice uses about 40 to 128 Kbps of bandwidth. That is small — but on a saturated connection, even that small amount can cause latency spikes.

  5. Enable QoS (Quality of Service) in Discord settings. Go to User Settings > Voice & Video > Quality of Service > Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority.

This setting tells Windows to prioritize Discord's network packets over other traffic. Note: it only works if your router also supports QoS prioritization. Most modern home routers do.

When to Call a Professional

High ping on Discord is almost always a network issue that can be resolved without professional help. If your internet consistently performs poorly, contact your ISP to check your line quality and router hardware. Discord high ping is never a Discord account or server problem that requires Discord Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good ping for Discord voice calls?

Under 50ms is excellent — you will not notice any delay. 50 to 100ms is good — most users cannot hear any difference. 100 to 200ms is acceptable — very slight delay but usually fine for conversation. Above 200ms becomes noticeably laggy, with voice arriving late and conversations stepping on each other. Above 400ms the call is barely usable.

Why is my ping low in games but high on Discord?

Games and Discord use different servers. Your game server may be hosted in a data center near you, while Discord's voice server for your channel may be in a farther region. Check if changing the voice channel's region override (if you are an admin) to a server closer to you brings the ping down.

Can Discord high ping cause echo or robot voices?

Yes — both echo and robot/choppy voice are symptoms of high ping or packet loss. Packet loss is when voice data packets are dropped entirely. Echo is often caused by audio processing trying to compensate for high latency. Fix the underlying ping issue first. Also check Discord's Noise Suppression and Echo Cancellation settings under User Settings > Voice & Video.
