Message Failed to Load

Discord Discord

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The 'Message Failed to Load' error in Discord means Discord could not retrieve and display one or more messages. This is usually a temporary loading issue caused by a poor connection or a brief Discord server hiccup. Reloading Discord or scrolling away and back almost always brings the messages back.

Affected Models

  • Discord on Windows
  • Discord on macOS
  • Discord on Browser
  • Discord on iPhone
  • Discord on Android

Common Causes

  • A brief internet connection interruption stopped Discord from loading part of the message history
  • Discord's message delivery servers had a temporary issue
  • The message contains a large embedded file or image that failed to load
  • The app cache has an incomplete or corrupted version of the message history
  • The Discord app is outdated and has a bug affecting message loading

How to Fix It

  1. Scroll up a little in the channel, then scroll back down. This forces Discord to reload the messages in the current view.

Discord loads messages in chunks — scrolling refreshes which chunk is displayed.

  2. Press Ctrl+R to reload Discord. This refreshes all data including message history.

A full reload fetches everything fresh from Discord's servers.

  3. Check your internet connection. A single dropped packet during message loading can cause this error. Try reloading after making sure your connection is stable.

If your Wi-Fi is weak, try moving closer to the router or switching to a wired connection.

  4. Click on a different channel, wait a few seconds, then click back on the original channel. This forces Discord to reload the channel's message history.

Switching channels clears the current channel's view and loads it fresh when you return.

  5. Clear Discord's cache. Close Discord, press Windows+R and type %appdata%\discord, open the Cache folder, and delete all files inside. Relaunch Discord.

If the cache stored a corrupted version of the message, clearing it forces a fresh download.

When to Call a Professional

Message loading errors are never permanent and do not require professional help. If messages fail to load consistently over multiple days, contact Discord Support. Messages are not deleted when they fail to load — they exist on Discord's servers and will appear once the loading issue is resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the failed-to-load messages lost permanently?

No. Messages are stored on Discord's servers, not just locally on your device. If a message fails to load, it is a display error — the message still exists and will appear once the loading issue is resolved. Try reloading Discord — the messages should come back.

One specific message keeps failing to load while others are fine. Why?

A specific message might fail to load if it contains an unusually large embedded image, a file from an external service that is down, or if it came from an account that was deleted. Messages from deleted accounts sometimes show as 'deleted message' or fail to load entirely.

Does Message Failed to Load mean the message was deleted by a moderator?

No — deleted messages show as 'Message Deleted' or simply disappear entirely, not as a loading error. A 'Message Failed to Load' error specifically means Discord could not retrieve the message — it may still exist and will appear once the loading issue is resolved.
