Overlay not working

Discord Discord

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The Discord overlay is the small widget that shows who's talking while you're in a game. When it stops working, it's usually because it's disabled in Discord settings, the game is running as administrator, or the game uses a rendering method the overlay doesn't support.

Affected Models

  • Discord (Windows)
  • Discord Canary
  • Discord PTB

Common Causes

  • The overlay is disabled in Discord's settings — it's off by default for some users
  • The game is running with administrator privileges but Discord is not, preventing injection
  • The game uses a rendering API (like Vulkan or older DirectX) that the overlay doesn't support
  • An antivirus or anti-cheat system is blocking Discord from injecting the overlay
  • Hardware acceleration is conflicting with the overlay display

How to Fix It

  1. Open Discord Settings (gear icon at the bottom left) > Game Overlay. Make sure 'Enable in-game overlay' is turned ON.

The overlay is sometimes off by default. This is the first thing to check.

  2. While still in the overlay settings, scroll down to find the game in the list and make sure the overlay is enabled for that specific game.

Discord has both a global overlay switch and per-game switches. Both must be enabled.

  3. Run Discord as administrator. Right-click the Discord shortcut > Properties > Compatibility > check 'Run this program as an administrator'.

If the game runs as admin and Discord doesn't, Discord can't inject the overlay into the game process.

  4. Disable hardware acceleration in Discord. Go to Settings > Advanced > Hardware Acceleration and toggle it off. Restart Discord.

Hardware acceleration can conflict with the overlay in some GPU configurations.

  5. Add Discord to your antivirus exclusions list. Some security software blocks the overlay's code injection as a suspicious activity.

Anti-cheat software in competitive games (like Valorant or PUBG) may permanently block the overlay. This cannot be bypassed.

When to Call a Professional

Discord overlay issues do not require any professional help. This is entirely a software configuration issue. If an anti-cheat system is permanently blocking the overlay in a specific game, there is no workaround — that game simply doesn't support it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Discord overlay work in some games but not others?

The overlay works by injecting itself into a running game's graphics process. Some games use rendering engines or anti-cheat systems that block this injection. The overlay works best with DirectX 11 games. It may not work in Vulkan, OpenGL, or games with aggressive anti-cheat.

Can the Discord overlay cause FPS drops or game lag?

Yes, it can in some cases. The overlay adds a small rendering layer on top of the game. On lower-end hardware, this can reduce frame rates. If your game is running poorly, try disabling the overlay to see if it helps.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to show or hide the overlay during a game?

Yes. The default shortcut is Shift + ` (the backtick key, to the left of 1). You can change this in Discord Settings > Game Overlay > Toggle Overlay Lock. Make sure this key isn't already used as a hotkey in the game.
