You need permission

Google Google Services

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

"You need permission" means the Google Drive file or folder you are trying to open has not been shared with you. The owner of the file controls who can view or edit it. You can request access directly from the error page, and the owner will receive an email to approve or deny it.

Affected Models

  • Google Drive in Chrome
  • Google Drive in Firefox
  • Google Drive in Safari
  • Google Drive on Android
  • Google Drive on iPhone

Common Causes

  • The file owner has not shared the file with your Google account
  • You are signed into a different Google account than the one the file was shared with
  • The file was previously shared with you but permissions were later removed
  • You received a link to a file that is set to restricted access only
  • The file was deleted or moved to a location you do not have access to

How to Fix It

  1. Click the Request access button on the error page. Enter a brief message explaining who you are, then click Send.

The file owner will receive an email and can approve your access with one click.

  2. Check which Google account you are signed in with. Click your profile picture in the top right corner and confirm the correct account is active.

If you have multiple Google accounts, you may be logged into the wrong one. Switch accounts and try the link again.

  3. Contact the person who shared the link with you. Ask them to share the file directly to your Google account email address.

Sharing via link with restricted access means only specifically listed people can open it — not anyone with the link.

  4. Ask the owner to change the sharing setting to Anyone with the link if they want broader access.

They can do this in Drive by right-clicking the file > Share > Change to Anyone with the link.

  5. If you are the owner and seeing this error, check the file has not been moved to a Shared Drive you no longer have access to.

Shared Drive files are owned by the organization, not you personally. Access can be revoked by an admin.

When to Call a Professional

This error never requires professional help. Contact the person who sent you the link and ask them to share the file with your specific Google account email address. Make sure you give them the exact email address you use for Google Drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can someone else open the same link but I cannot?

The file is likely shared with specific people, not everyone. The other person's Google account is on the approved list and yours is not. Contact the file owner and ask them to add your email address specifically.

I used to have access to this file but now I don't. What happened?

The owner may have removed your access or changed the file's sharing settings. They can do this at any time without notifying you. Reach out to the owner and ask them to re-share the file with you.

Can I access a Google Drive file without a Google account?

Only if the owner has set it to Anyone with the link and allowed access without signing in. Most shared files require a Google account. If you do not have one, you can create a free Google account at accounts.google.com.
