Microphone Not Working
Google Google Services
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
When your microphone does not work in Google Meet, people in the meeting cannot hear you. This is almost always a browser permission problem, a wrong microphone selected, or the microphone being muted at the system level. It is usually fixable in under two minutes.
Affected Models
- Google Meet on Chrome
- Google Meet on Edge
- Google Meet on Firefox
- Google Meet on Safari
Common Causes
- The browser does not have permission to use your microphone — you may have accidentally clicked 'Block' when asked
- The wrong microphone is selected in Google Meet's audio settings (common when a headset is connected)
- The microphone is muted in Windows Sound Settings or macOS System Preferences
- Another app (like Zoom or Teams) has exclusive control of the microphone and is not releasing it
- Your browser needs to be updated and has a bug affecting microphone access
How to Fix It
-
Check the microphone permission in Chrome. Click the padlock icon next to the website address in Chrome. Make sure Microphone is set to 'Allow', not 'Block'.
If it is set to Block, change it to Allow and refresh the page. Meet will ask permission again — click Allow.
-
Inside the Google Meet call, click the three-dot menu at the bottom > Settings > Audio. Check which microphone is selected and make sure it is the correct one.
If you have a headset plugged in, meet may default to the built-in laptop microphone (or vice versa). Select the right device manually.
-
Check Windows Sound Settings. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar > Open Sound Settings > Input. Make sure your microphone is not muted and the volume is turned up.
The microphone volume in Windows must be above zero, and the device must not be disabled.
-
Close other apps that use the microphone — Zoom, Teams, Discord, voice recorders. On Windows, only one app can use some microphones at a time.
Even apps minimized to the system tray may be holding on to the microphone. Fully exit them.
-
Try opening Meet in a different browser like Edge or Firefox. If the microphone works there, the problem is specific to Chrome — try clearing Chrome's cache or reinstalling Chrome.
A browser-specific fix for Chrome: go to chrome://settings/content/microphone and make sure meet.google.com is in the Allowed list.
When to Call a Professional
Microphone issues in Google Meet are almost always software-related and fixable yourself. If your microphone does not work in any app on your computer (not just Meet), the problem may be hardware-related. In that case, try a different microphone or headset to determine whether the microphone itself is faulty.
Frequently Asked Questions
My microphone works in other apps but not in Google Meet. Why?
This is almost always a browser permission issue. Chrome requires explicit permission to access your microphone for each website. Check the padlock icon next to meet.google.com in Chrome's address bar and make sure the microphone is set to Allow.
Can I test my microphone before joining a meeting?
Yes. Before joining a meeting, Google Meet shows a preview screen where you can see and hear yourself. Click the microphone icon and speak — if the level bar moves, your microphone is working. You can also test at meet.google.com — start a new meeting, then leave immediately after confirming your audio works.
My microphone shows as allowed in Chrome, but Meet still can't hear me. What else can I try?
Try clearing Chrome's site permissions for Meet entirely. Go to chrome://settings/content/microphone, find meet.google.com in the blocked or allowed list, and remove it. Then reload Meet — Chrome will ask for permission fresh. Also make sure Windows privacy settings allow Chrome to use the microphone: Settings > Privacy > Microphone > make sure Chrome is on the allowed list.
