Screen Share Not Working

Google Video Conferencing

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Meet screen sharing fails most often due to missing screen recording permission on Mac, a browser lacking access to display sharing, or a meeting policy set by the meeting organizer. On Mac, this requires a one-time permission grant in System Settings that requires a browser restart. Granting screen recording permission to Chrome or your browser fixes the issue in most cases.

Affected Models

  • Google Meet Web
  • Google Meet Android App
  • Google Meet iOS App
  • Google Workspace
  • All Google accounts

Common Causes

  • Screen recording permission not granted to the browser on macOS
  • Browser extension or security software blocking screen capture
  • Meeting host has disabled screen sharing in the meeting controls
  • Using an outdated browser version that lacks screen sharing support
  • Wayland display server on Linux not supported by Chrome screen sharing

How to Fix It

  1. On Mac, go to System Settings > Privacy and Security > Screen Recording and make sure your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) is checked.

macOS requires explicit screen recording permission for each browser — this is the most common cause of Meet screen share failure on Mac.

  2. After granting screen recording permission on Mac, fully quit the browser and reopen it — the permission does not take effect until restart.

Closing just the tab is not enough — the entire browser application must be closed and reopened for the permission change to work.

  3. In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Additional Permissions and make sure screen sharing is not blocked for meet.google.com.

Chrome keeps per-site permissions that can block screen share even when the OS permission is granted.

  4. Disable browser extensions one by one — ad blockers, screen capture tools, and privacy extensions sometimes interfere with Meet.

Test in an Incognito window first where most extensions are disabled — if sharing works there, an extension is the cause.

  5. If you see a black screen when sharing, try sharing a specific browser tab or application window instead of the entire screen.

Certain apps with DRM protection (like Netflix or certain video players) show as black when captured — sharing a tab avoids this.

When to Call a Professional

Screen sharing issues are device and browser related and do not require contacting Google support. If screen sharing is blocked by your organization in Google Workspace, your IT administrator controls that policy. For persistent black screen issues on a specific monitor, try sharing a specific window or tab instead of your entire screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I share my screen in Zoom but not in Google Meet?

Google Meet uses browser-based screen capture which requires browser-level permissions, whereas Zoom is a native app with direct OS access. Granting your browser screen recording permission in your OS settings will fix Meet.

Why does my screen appear black to other participants when I share?

A black screen usually means the content being captured is DRM-protected or comes from a hardware-accelerated graphics layer. Try sharing a specific Chrome tab instead of the full screen — this works for most content including presentations.

Can the meeting host prevent me from sharing my screen?

Yes — Google Meet host controls include the ability to restrict screen sharing to the host only. If the share screen button is grayed out in a meeting you did not create, ask the organizer to enable screen sharing for participants.
