Not Backing Up

Google Photo Storage App

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Photos is not uploading your photos to Google Drive, which means your pictures are not safely backed up. This is usually caused by a full Google storage quota, a disabled backup setting, or a Wi-Fi restriction. Your photos are still safe on your device — they just have not been backed up to the cloud yet.

Affected Models

  • Google Photos iOS App
  • Google Photos Android App
  • Google Photos Web
  • All Google accounts

Common Causes

  • Google account storage (shared with Gmail and Drive) is full — backup pauses at 15 GB free tier
  • Backup and sync is turned off in Google Photos settings
  • The app is set to back up on Wi-Fi only, and the device is on mobile data
  • Google Photos app needs an update or has a background process restriction
  • The Google account is signed out or has an authentication error

How to Fix It

  1. Open Google Photos, tap your profile picture, and select Photos settings → Backup to confirm backup is turned on.

Backup can be silently turned off after an app update or OS change — this is the first thing to check.

  2. Check your Google account storage at one.google.com/storage — if you are at or near 15 GB, backup will pause.

Google pauses backups when your free 15 GB is full — you must either buy more storage or free up space by deleting old Gmail attachments or Drive files.

  3. In Google Photos settings, check the Backup quality and network settings — make sure it is not restricted to Wi-Fi only if you want it to back up on mobile data.

The default setting backs up on Wi-Fi only to save mobile data — if you are rarely on Wi-Fi, this will cause a large backup backlog.

  4. On Android, go to Settings → Apps → Google Photos → Battery → set to Unrestricted, and confirm Background activity is allowed.

Android battery optimization frequently prevents Google Photos from running in the background to complete uploads.

  5. Sign out of your Google account in the Photos app and sign back in to refresh the authentication token.

An expired or corrupted authentication session can silently block backups without showing an obvious error message.

  6. Update Google Photos to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Older versions of the app may have bugs that prevent backup — updating often resolves persistent backup failures.

When to Call a Professional

Google Photos backup issues are self-fixable in almost all cases. If photos appear to have been deleted from Google Photos and are not on your device either, contact Google Support at support.google.com immediately. For recurring backup failures on a work account, your Google Workspace administrator may have restrictions in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Google Photos delete my photos if storage is full?

No — Google will pause new backups but will not delete your existing backed-up photos. Your photos on your phone are also unaffected. You need to either purchase more Google One storage or free up space before new photos will back up.

How do I check how many photos are waiting to back up?

Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture — you will see a backup status message showing how many items are waiting. If backup is active, you will see a progress indicator. Tapping the status opens more detail about what is queued.

Does Google Photos backup videos as well as photos?

Yes — Google Photos backs up both photos and videos. Videos take much more storage space than photos and fill up your 15 GB quota faster. If you have many videos, consider upgrading to Google One storage.
