Slide Not Rendering

Microsoft Microsoft PowerPoint

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

PowerPoint slides show up blank or broken when fonts are missing or images can't be found. This usually happens when a presentation is moved between computers. Most fixes take just a few minutes.

Affected Models

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2019
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2021
  • Microsoft 365 PowerPoint
  • PowerPoint for Windows

Common Causes

  • Custom fonts used in the presentation are not installed on the current computer
  • Images were linked instead of embedded — moving the file breaks the link to the images
  • Hardware graphics acceleration conflicts with certain display drivers
  • The PowerPoint file is partially corrupted
  • Slide master or theme conflict causing slides to display incorrectly

How to Fix It

  1. Embed fonts when saving so they travel with the file: File > Options > Save > check 'Embed fonts in the file'.

This makes the presentation larger but ensures it looks the same on any computer, even without those fonts installed.

  2. Relink or replace any missing images: right-click the broken image placeholder > Change Picture > browse for the image file.

If the original image file is gone, you'll need to find and reinsert it. Embedding images avoids this problem in future.

  3. Disable hardware graphics acceleration: File > Options > Advanced > Display > check 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration'.

This forces PowerPoint to use software rendering, which is more compatible with older display drivers.

  4. Copy all slides to a fresh presentation: press Ctrl+A to select all slides, copy, then paste into a new blank PowerPoint file.

This strips out any corrupted slide master data or theme conflicts that may be causing blank slides.

  5. Repair your Office installation: Control Panel > Programs > Microsoft 365 > Change > Quick Repair.

If slides are blank only in PowerPoint but other Office apps work fine, a Quick Repair often resolves it.

When to Call a Professional

Slide rendering problems are something you can fix yourself. All fixes are done within PowerPoint or your system settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my PowerPoint fonts look different on another computer?

The fonts used in your presentation are not installed on the other computer. Embed your fonts when saving: File > Options > Save > Embed fonts in the file.

Why are my PowerPoint images showing as blank boxes?

The images were linked to files on your computer instead of being embedded in the presentation. When you moved the file, PowerPoint lost track of where those images are.

My slide looks fine in Edit mode but goes blank in Presentation mode — why?

This is almost always a hardware graphics acceleration conflict. Go to File > Options > Advanced > Display and check 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration'.
