Files Not Loading
Microsoft Microsoft Teams
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Files tab in Teams is not showing your shared documents. This is usually caused by a SharePoint permission issue or a temporary Microsoft service problem. Signing out and back in or clearing the cache often fixes it.
Affected Models
- Microsoft Teams for Windows
- Microsoft Teams for Mac
- Microsoft Teams on Web
Common Causes
- A temporary outage or slowdown on Microsoft SharePoint servers
- Your account does not have permission to view the shared files
- A corrupted Teams cache is preventing the Files tab from loading
- The Teams app needs an update to work with the latest SharePoint changes
- A browser extension or firewall is blocking the SharePoint connection (web version)
How to Fix It
-
Check the Microsoft service status. Go to status.office365.com and look for any reported SharePoint or Teams outages. If there is an outage, wait for Microsoft to fix it.
Files in Teams are actually stored in SharePoint. If SharePoint is down, Files won't load.
-
Try opening the file directly on SharePoint. In Teams, right-click a file and choose 'Open in SharePoint'. If that also fails, it confirms a SharePoint or permission issue.
If SharePoint opens fine but Teams won't show files, the Teams app itself is the problem.
-
Clear the Teams cache. Quit Teams, then open File Explorer and navigate to %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams. Delete the contents of that folder. Reopen Teams and check the Files tab.
On Mac, the cache folder is at ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams.
-
Sign out of Teams and sign back in. Click your profile picture, choose 'Sign out', then reopen Teams and log in again. This refreshes your account permissions.
This is especially useful if your SharePoint access token has expired.
-
Try the Teams web app as a workaround. Open your browser and go to teams.microsoft.com. If Files load there, the issue is with your desktop app only.
The web version uses a fresh connection and avoids local cache issues.
When to Call a Professional
If you are missing access to files that you previously had permission to view, contact your IT department or team owner. Permissions are managed by your organisation and cannot be changed by the end user.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Teams files say I don't have permission?
Your account may not have been granted access to that channel or file. Ask the team owner or your IT department to check your SharePoint permissions.
Can I access my Teams files without opening Teams?
Yes. Go to office.com, sign in, and click SharePoint or OneDrive. All files shared in Teams are stored there and can be accessed directly.
The Files tab loads for some channels but not others — why?
Each channel has its own SharePoint folder. You may have permission to some channels but not others. Contact your team owner to check.
