Word Document Recovery

Microsoft Microsoft Office

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

When Word shows the Document Recovery pane on startup, it means Word (or your computer) closed unexpectedly last time. Word noticed you had unsaved changes and automatically saved a copy before it closed. The recovery pane is Word offering you those saved copies so you do not lose your work.

Affected Models

  • Microsoft Word 2016
  • Microsoft Word 2019
  • Microsoft Word 2021
  • Microsoft 365 Word

Common Causes

  • Your computer lost power or was shut down while Word was open with unsaved changes
  • Word crashed due to a bug, an add-in conflict, or running out of memory
  • Windows restarted automatically after a Windows update while Word was open
  • Word stopped responding and Windows closed it automatically
  • Your device battery died while Word was open on a laptop

How to Fix It

  1. When the Document Recovery pane appears on the left, look through the listed files. Click the one you want to review — it will open in the main editing area.

Compare the recovered version with any manually saved version. Keep the one with more of your work intact.

  2. To keep a recovered file, go to File > Save As immediately and save it with a proper name and location. If you close the recovery pane without saving, the recovered files are permanently deleted.

Word deletes its AutoRecover files once you make a decision about them. Save them right away to avoid losing them.

  3. If the recovered file is not what you need, look for a manually saved copy in your Documents folder. The last time you pressed Ctrl + S is the most recent clean save.

AutoRecover files are temporary. Your last manual save is usually the most reliable version.

  4. Check that AutoSave and AutoRecover are both enabled. Go to File > Options > Save and make sure Save AutoRecover information every X minutes is checked. Set it to 5 minutes for maximum protection.

The default is every 10 minutes. Setting it to every 5 minutes means you never lose more than 5 minutes of work if Word crashes.

  5. If Word crashes regularly, run an Office Quick Repair. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Microsoft 365 > Change > Quick Repair.

Repeated crashes are not normal. A Quick Repair fixes corrupted Office files that are causing instability.

When to Call a Professional

Document recovery is a built-in Word feature and does not require professional help. If Word is crashing repeatedly, an IT technician can help identify whether an add-in, a corrupted installation, or a hardware issue is causing the crashes. Frequent crashes may also indicate that your PC needs more RAM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Word show two versions of the same document in the recovery pane?

Word may show both the AutoRecover version (automatically saved during your session) and the last manually saved version. Compare them by clicking each one. Choose the one with the most recent and complete work, save it, and discard the other.

The recovery pane is empty. Where is my work?

If the recovery pane is empty, Word did not have a chance to save an AutoRecover copy before it closed. Check your Documents folder for the last manually saved version. Also check OneDrive if you use it — it may have a previous version saved. Go to File > Info > Manage Document and look for any autosaved versions listed there.

Can I recover a document if I accidentally clicked Don't Save when closing Word?

Sometimes. Go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents. Word keeps unsaved documents in a temporary folder for a short time. If your document appears there, open it and save it immediately. This only works if the document was new and never saved before — for previously saved files, the last saved version is the only one recoverable.
