Status Not Updating

Slack Slack

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Slack status isn't changing — or it doesn't show correctly to other people. This is often caused by a calendar integration automatically overriding your manual status. Disabling the calendar sync or manually refreshing fixes it quickly.

Affected Models

  • Slack on Windows
  • Slack on Mac
  • Slack on iPhone
  • Slack on Android

Common Causes

  • Slow sync between devices — status changed on one device but not yet updated elsewhere
  • Google Calendar or Outlook integration is automatically overriding your manual status
  • Do Not Disturb schedule is affecting how your status appears
  • Connectivity issue preventing the status change from saving
  • App needs a refresh or cache clear

How to Fix It

  1. Refresh Slack on all your devices — press Ctrl+R on Windows or Cmd+R on Mac.

Status sync can lag between devices — a refresh usually brings everything up to date.

  2. Check if Google Calendar or Outlook is automatically setting your status.

Go to your profile > Set a status > look for a note saying a calendar is controlling it.

  3. Go to your profile and manually set or clear your status.

Click your name or avatar, choose 'Set a status', and update it there.

  4. Toggle from Away to Active by clicking your status indicator.

Sometimes Slack gets stuck on Away — clicking the dot next to your name resets it.

  5. Sign out of Slack and sign back in if the status still won't update.

A fresh session re-establishes your connection and clears any stuck state.

When to Call a Professional

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Slack status show 'Away' when I'm actively using Slack?

Slack marks you as Away after a period of no keyboard or mouse activity. If you're reading but not typing, it may still switch you to Away. You can manually set your status to Active at any time by clicking the dot next to your name.

Can I stop my calendar from automatically changing my Slack status?

Yes — go to your Slack profile, click 'Edit Profile', then scroll to 'Connected Calendars'. From there you can disconnect Google Calendar or Outlook. Your status will no longer change automatically based on meeting events.

Does my Slack status sync between mobile and desktop?

Yes — your status is stored on Slack's servers and should sync across all devices. If it looks different on mobile vs desktop, one device may just need a refresh. Signing out and back in on the out-of-sync device usually resolves it.
