Location Not Updating

Snapchat App

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Open Snapchat and pinch the camera screen to open Snap Map — your location only updates when the app is open. Check Ghost Mode: Snap Map → Settings (gear icon) — if Ghost Mode is On, your location is hidden and will not update for others. Grant Always-On location permission so Snap Map can update in the background.

Affected Models

  • Snapchat on iOS
  • Snapchat on Android

Common Causes

  • Ghost Mode enabled — location is intentionally hidden
  • Snapchat only has 'While Using' location permission instead of Always or Background
  • Location not refreshed because the app has not been opened recently
  • Device GPS turned off or set to low-accuracy mode
  • VPN masking the device's real GPS coordinates and reporting a wrong location

How to Fix It

  1. Check Ghost Mode

Open Snapchat → pinch the camera view to open Snap Map → tap the Settings gear (top right) → confirm Ghost Mode is Off. With Ghost Mode on, your location does not appear on the map for anyone — including yourself in the preview.

  2. Open Snapchat to refresh your location

Snap Map only updates your location when you open Snapchat. The position shown is from the last time the app was actively open. Open the app, wait 10 seconds, then check the map.

  3. Enable location permission

iPhone: Settings → Snapchat → Location → Always. Android: Settings → Apps → Snapchat → Permissions → Location → Allow all the time. The 'While Using' setting stops location from updating when the app is backgrounded.

  4. Enable device GPS

iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → On. Android: Settings → Location → On. Also set Location mode to High Accuracy — battery saver mode reduces GPS precision.

  5. Disable your VPN

A VPN routes your internet traffic through another country, which can cause Snap Map to show your location as that country instead of your real GPS location. Disable the VPN and reopen Snap Map.

When to Call a Professional

Snap Map location issues are always a permissions or settings issue. No account action is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Snap Map shows me in the wrong city — why?

A VPN or weak GPS signal can place you in the wrong location. Disable any VPN, move to an area with a clear view of the sky, and open Snapchat to force a GPS refresh.

Friend's location on Snap Map hasn't moved in days — are they in Ghost Mode?

Not necessarily — their location simply has not refreshed because they have not opened Snapchat recently. Snap Map only updates when the person opens the app.

Can I make my Snap Map location update more frequently?

No — Snap Map updates each time you open Snapchat. For real-time location sharing, use Snapchat's Live Location feature instead: Snap Map → your Bitmoji → Share Live Location.
