Memories Not Loading
Snapchat Social Media App
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
When Snapchat Memories will not load, the app cannot sync your saved Snaps from Snapchat's cloud servers. Your Memories are NOT deleted — they are stored safely in the cloud and a sync failure just means they are temporarily invisible. Checking your internet connection and clearing the cache almost always brings them back.
Affected Models
- iOS
- Android
- Snapchat for Web
Common Causes
- Internet connection is too weak to sync the Memories library
- App cache is corrupted and blocking the Memories sync process
- Snapchat Memories servers are experiencing a temporary outage
- Memories sync is set to Wi-Fi only and you are on mobile data
- App is out of date and incompatible with the current Memories format
How to Fix It
-
Check your internet connection — switch to a strong Wi-Fi network if you are on mobile data, since Memories sync defaults to Wi-Fi only.
By default, Snapchat only syncs Memories over Wi-Fi to save mobile data; switching to Wi-Fi triggers the sync to run.
-
In Snapchat settings, go to Settings > Memories > Smart Backup and confirm it is enabled — if it is off, your Memories will not sync.
Smart Backup must be turned on for Memories to upload to and download from the cloud; if it was accidentally disabled, Memories will appear missing.
-
Force-close Snapchat completely, wait 10 seconds, and reopen it — then navigate to Memories and wait up to 2 minutes.
Memories sometimes need a minute to sync after the app opens; a fresh restart ensures the sync process starts cleanly.
-
Clear the Snapchat app cache: on Android go to Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Storage > Clear Cache; on iPhone delete and reinstall the app.
A corrupted local cache can prevent the Memories sync from completing — clearing it forces the app to re-download the Memories index from the cloud.
-
Update Snapchat to the latest version in the App Store or Google Play Store, then reopen and check Memories.
Outdated app versions sometimes cannot read the Memories format returned by updated servers, showing an empty or loading state indefinitely.
When to Call a Professional

Frequently Asked Questions
Are my Memories actually deleted when they do not load?
Almost certainly not — Memories are stored in Snapchat's cloud, not on your device. A loading failure means the app cannot retrieve them right now, not that they are gone. They will reappear once the sync issue is resolved.
Why do some Memories load but others show a loading spinner forever?
Individual Memories that fail to load may have become partially corrupted during their original upload. Tap and hold on the stuck Memory and select Download to force a fresh download attempt directly from the cloud.
Does reinstalling Snapchat delete Memories saved on my phone?
No — Memories backed up to Snapchat's cloud are safe during a reinstall. However, if you saved Memories only to your device's camera roll, reinstalling will not affect those either — they stay in your photos app.
