Crossfade Not Working
Spotify Spotify
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Spotify's crossfade feature smoothly blends one song into the next. When it stops working, songs end abruptly or the transition sounds wrong. This is usually caused by a setting that got reset, a conflict with audio hardware settings, or a bug in the Spotify app that a reinstall will fix.
Affected Models
- Spotify on Windows
- Spotify on macOS
- Spotify on iPhone
- Spotify on Android
Common Causes
- Crossfade was turned off in Spotify settings — it is not enabled by default
- The Automix feature is conflicting with Crossfade (they cannot both work at the same time)
- An audio driver update changed the way audio is processed, affecting how Spotify fades audio
- Crossfade does not work with Spotify podcasts — it only works between music tracks
- A bug in the current version of Spotify is affecting the crossfade function
How to Fix It
-
Check that Crossfade is enabled. Go to Settings (click your profile name > Settings) and scroll to the 'Playback' section. Make sure the Crossfade slider is turned on and set to your preferred duration (1–12 seconds).
Crossfade is off by default. If the slider is at zero, songs will not blend.
-
Check if Automix is also enabled. Crossfade and Automix are separate features — Automix overrides Crossfade for some playlists. Try turning Automix off in the same Playback settings section.
Automix uses Spotify's own transition algorithm — it can override your Crossfade setting.
-
Make sure you are listening to music tracks, not podcasts. Crossfade only works between music tracks — it does not apply to podcasts or audiobooks.
If your playlist mixes music and podcasts, crossfade will skip when a podcast comes up.
-
Log out and back in to Spotify. Sometimes settings do not apply correctly until a fresh session is started.
Go to your profile > Log Out, then log back in.
-
Reinstall Spotify if crossfade still does not work. Uninstall, delete the AppData Spotify folders, and install a fresh copy from spotify.com.
A fresh installation resets all audio settings to their defaults and eliminates any software bugs from the previous install.
When to Call a Professional
Crossfade is a non-critical feature — its absence does not prevent you from using Spotify. If none of the fixes below work, check the Spotify Community forums to see if others are reporting the same issue. A bug in the current app version is sometimes the cause, and Spotify typically releases a fix within a few app updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Crossfade work on all devices?
Crossfade is available on Spotify's desktop app (Windows and Mac) and mobile apps (iOS and Android). It is not available on all smart TV apps, game console apps, or some third-party Spotify integrations. If you want crossfade, use the official Spotify app on your phone or computer.
Why does crossfade sound choppy or cut out on some songs?
Some songs have a few seconds of silence at the beginning or end — crossfade can make these transitions sound odd. Also, very loud or very quiet tracks can make the fade sound uneven. This is normal behavior, not a bug.
What is the best crossfade duration to use?
Most people find 2–5 seconds feels natural. Very short crossfades (1 second) sound almost like a normal cut. Very long crossfades (10–12 seconds) overlap songs significantly, which can clash if the songs are in different keys. Start with 4 seconds and adjust to your preference.
