Offline Mode
Spotify Spotify
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
When Spotify is in Offline Mode, it can only play songs you have already downloaded to your device. Any song that is not downloaded will show an error or appear greyed out. This mode is meant for times with no internet — like on a plane — but sometimes gets switched on by accident.
Affected Models
- Spotify on Windows
- Spotify on Mac
- Spotify on Android
- Spotify on iPhone
Common Causes
- Offline Mode was turned on accidentally in Spotify's settings
- Spotify automatically switched to offline mode when your internet dropped
- You are a free user who does not have access to offline downloads
- Your downloaded songs expired because you have not been online in 30 days
- The Spotify app lost connection and did not switch back online automatically
How to Fix It
-
On desktop: click the three dots (…) menu at the top of Spotify and look for 'Offline Mode'. Make sure it is unchecked.
It is easy to enable this by accident. Disabling it immediately reconnects Spotify to the internet.
-
On mobile: go to Settings (gear icon) > Playback and toggle Offline Mode off.
If the toggle is green or blue, offline mode is on. Tap it to turn it off.
-
Check your internet connection. If your Wi-Fi dropped, Spotify may have entered offline mode automatically.
Reconnect to Wi-Fi, then manually turn offline mode off in Spotify settings.
-
If your downloaded songs are greyed out, they may have expired. Connect to the internet to refresh them.
Spotify requires you to connect online at least once every 30 days to keep offline downloads active.
-
Log out and log back in. This resets Spotify's connection state and usually clears any stuck offline status.
Make sure you know your login details before logging out.
When to Call a Professional
Offline mode issues do not require professional help. However, note that offline downloads are only available to Spotify Premium subscribers. Free users cannot use Offline Mode at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Spotify free users use offline mode?
No. Offline Mode and song downloads are exclusive to Spotify Premium. If you are on the free plan, you always need an active internet connection to listen.
Why did my downloaded songs disappear after 30 days?
Spotify requires Premium users to connect to the internet at least once every 30 days. This lets Spotify verify your subscription is still active. If you go more than 30 days offline, your downloads are removed as a DRM protection measure.
I turned offline mode off but Spotify still won't stream. Why?
Check that your internet connection is actually working by opening a browser. If the internet is fine, try clearing Spotify's cache or logging out and back in. Sometimes Spotify needs a full restart after disabling offline mode.
