Steam Steam

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Steam Error Code 25 means there is a problem with the connection between the Steam client and the game server — or between the Steam client and Steam's own servers. This error is most common in multiplayer games when the game server connection is lost or times out. It can also appear during game launches or updates when Steam cannot maintain a stable connection. Restarting Steam and checking your network usually resolves it.

Affected Models

  • Steam (Windows)
  • Steam (macOS)
  • Steam (Linux)

Common Causes

  • Unstable internet connection causing the server connection to time out mid-session
  • Game server is under heavy load or has crashed on the developer's side
  • A network router setting (NAT type or firewall rule) is terminating the connection prematurely
  • Steam client update is pending and the client cannot run the game in its current version state
  • Steam servers are experiencing a regional disruption affecting your connection

How to Fix It

  1. Close Steam completely and reopen it. Right-click the Steam icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner of Windows taskbar) and click Exit. Wait 30 seconds, then relaunch Steam. Let Steam fully connect before trying the game again.

A full Steam restart refreshes the connection to Steam's servers and clears any stale session data that can cause error 25.

  2. Check if there is a Steam client update waiting. When you reopen Steam, it may update automatically. Allow the update to fully complete before launching any games.

Running an outdated Steam client can cause connection errors with Steam's servers, which have moved to a newer protocol.

  3. Restart your router and modem. Unplug both from power, wait 60 seconds, plug the modem in first (wait 30 seconds), then the router. Once your internet is back, reopen Steam.

Error 25 during multiplayer is often caused by a brief router hiccup that interrupts the game server connection. A router restart gives you a fresh, stable connection.

  4. If error 25 only occurs in one specific game, check that game's Steam discussions for any server outage reports. Go to the game's Steam store page, click Community Hub, and look for recent threads about connection errors.

Game-specific error 25 is often caused by the game's own servers being down — not Steam itself. In that case, only the game developer can fix it.

  5. Flush your network settings. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands one at a time: 'ipconfig /flushdns', then 'netsh winsock reset'. Restart your computer after running both commands.

Resetting Winsock clears the Windows network configuration stack. This fixes connection errors caused by corrupted network settings — and is completely safe to do.

When to Call a Professional

Error code 25 is a network connection error. No professional service is needed. If the error only occurs in one specific game, contact that game's support team — the problem may be server-side. For persistent Steam-wide issues, contact Steam Support at help.steampowered.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does error code 25 mean I am banned from Steam?

No. Steam bans display a very specific message with your ban status — they do not use error code 25. Error 25 is a connection error that any user can experience regardless of account standing.

Why does error 25 happen in the middle of a game?

The most common reason is an internet connection drop. Even a brief disconnection lasting only a second can cause the game server to drop your session. Switching from Wi-Fi to a wired ethernet connection is the most effective way to prevent mid-game disconnects.

Can error code 25 cause me to lose game progress?

It depends on the game. Most modern games autosave frequently, and Steam games sync saves to Steam Cloud. However, if you were in the middle of an unsaved section when error 25 disconnected you, you may lose a small amount of progress. For online-only games, progress made during a dropped session is typically lost.
