Stream Quality Issues
Twitch Streaming Platform
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your Twitch stream looks blurry or pixelated, the quality has been set to a low resolution — either manually or automatically by Twitch's adaptive bitrate system. Twitch automatically lowers quality when it detects a slow or unstable connection to prevent buffering. You can manually force a higher quality by clicking the gear icon in the player and selecting your preferred resolution. If high quality still looks blurry, the streamer may not be broadcasting in high resolution.
Affected Models
- Twitch Web (Chrome)
- Twitch Web (Firefox)
- Twitch Web (Safari)
- Twitch Android App
- Twitch iOS App
Common Causes
- Twitch's auto quality system selected a low resolution because your connection speed fluctuated
- You or a previous visitor manually set quality to a low setting and it was saved by the player
- The streamer is broadcasting at a low bitrate or resolution (not all streamers broadcast in 1080p)
- Your internet connection is too slow to sustain a higher quality setting
- Twitch is throttling non-partner streams to lower quality tiers due to server capacity limits
How to Fix It
-
Click the gear icon at the bottom right of the Twitch player. Select Quality from the menu. Choose 1080p60, 720p60, or the highest available option. Auto mode may select lower quality — override it manually.
Not all streamers offer 1080p. The highest available quality depends on how the streamer has configured their broadcast.
-
Check your internet speed at speedtest.net. To watch at 1080p60 you need a consistent download speed of at least 8 Mbps. For 720p60, aim for at least 4 Mbps.
If your speed is below these thresholds, your connection is the limiting factor, not Twitch.
-
Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi speed fluctuates due to interference, which causes Twitch's adaptive system to drop quality. A stable wired connection lets you hold higher quality settings.
Even if your Wi-Fi speed test looks fast, real-world streaming benefits greatly from the stability of a wired connection.
-
Check if the stream quality is a streamer limitation. Look at the player's quality menu — if the highest available option is 720p or lower, the streamer is not broadcasting in 1080p. This is their choice and cannot be changed on your end.
Many streamers broadcast in 720p60 to reduce costs and streaming hardware load. This is normal.
-
Disable browser extensions that may compress or modify video, such as data-saving extensions. Some extensions intentionally lower video quality to reduce bandwidth usage.
Data saving extensions are rare on desktop browsers but common as mobile browser features.
-
Restart your router and modem to refresh your connection. A restarted router often achieves a cleaner, more stable connection that allows Twitch's adaptive system to maintain higher quality.
Unplug both devices for 30 seconds. Plug the modem in first, wait for it to connect, then plug in the router.
When to Call a Professional
Stream quality issues are settings and network problems — no professional help is needed. If quality is poor on all streaming sites, contact your ISP about your connection speed. If only one streamer looks blurry and others look sharp, the issue is the streamer's broadcast settings, which you cannot control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Twitch quality capped at 720p on some channels?
Twitch limits non-partner streamers to a maximum of 720p 60fps or 1080p 30fps. Only streamers who have achieved Twitch Partner status get access to transcoding at all quality levels including 1080p60. If the streamer you are watching is an Affiliate (not a Partner), Twitch may only offer their stream in the original broadcast quality without lower quality options.
Does Twitch look worse than YouTube at the same resolution?
Often yes — Twitch applies more video compression than YouTube at equivalent resolutions due to bandwidth costs. Live streaming also prevents the frame-perfect encoding optimization that pre-recorded YouTube videos receive. A 1080p Twitch stream may look visibly more compressed than a 1080p YouTube video, especially during fast motion like games.
Can I save my quality preference so Twitch always starts at the same quality?
Yes — once you manually select a quality level, Twitch saves your preference and applies it to future streams automatically. However, if a stream does not offer your saved quality tier, Twitch falls back to Auto. Some browsers clear site preferences when cookies are cleared, resetting your saved quality setting to Auto.
