Bank Not Linking
Venmo Payment App
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Venmo bank linking failure is usually caused by entering incorrect account details, your bank not supporting Venmo's instant verification, or a temporary bank portal issue. Try the micro-deposit method as a fallback if instant verification keeps failing.
Affected Models
- Venmo for iOS
- Venmo for Android
- Venmo web (venmo.com)
Common Causes
- Wrong routing or account number entered
- Bank not supported by Venmo's instant verification (Plaid)
- Online banking credentials incorrect during instant verification
- Bank account already linked to another Venmo account
- Venmo does not accept prepaid accounts or some credit unions
How to Fix It
-
Double-check your routing and account numbers.
Your routing number is the first 9 digits on the bottom of a cheque. Your account number follows it (typically 10-12 digits). Do not confuse the cheque number (last set of digits) with the account number.
-
Try Venmo's instant verification with your online banking login.
Venmo uses Plaid for instant verification — log into your online banking through the Plaid screen. Make sure you are using your online banking username and password, not your debit card PIN.
-
Use micro-deposit verification if instant verification fails.
Tap 'Verify with bank statement' instead. Venmo sends two small deposits (under $1 each) to your account within 1-3 business days. Enter both amounts in the Venmo app to complete linking.
-
Check that the account is not already linked to another Venmo account.
Each bank account can only be linked to one Venmo account at a time. If you have an old Venmo account, unlink the bank there first before adding it to your current account.
-
Try a debit card instead if bank linking is blocked.
If your bank or credit union is not supported, add your debit card instead. Go to Me → Payment Methods → Add Bank or Card → Debit Card. Most Visa and Mastercard debit cards are accepted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Venmo work with all US banks?
Venmo works with most major US banks and credit unions. Prepaid debit cards, some small credit unions, and foreign bank accounts are not supported. If your bank fails to link, try adding a debit card instead.
Is it safe to give Venmo my bank login credentials?
Venmo uses Plaid, a regulated third-party service, to access your bank. Plaid is used by hundreds of financial apps and is SOC 2 compliant. Venmo itself never stores your banking username or password.
