Can't Send Money

Venmo Payment App

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Venmo blocking you from sending money is usually caused by an unverified account hitting its weekly limit, a frozen account, or Venmo flagging your activity. Check the Me tab in the app for any warnings or limits shown on your account.

Affected Models

  • Venmo for iOS
  • Venmo for Android
  • Venmo web (venmo.com)

Common Causes

  • Unverified account reached the $299.99 weekly sending limit
  • Account frozen or restricted by Venmo's risk team
  • New account — Venmo restricts sending for the first few days
  • Sending to someone Venmo does not recognise as a trusted contact
  • Linked bank account or card has been removed or expired

How to Fix It

  1. Check your weekly sending limit in the Venmo app.

Tap Me (your profile icon) → scroll down to see your payment limits. Unverified accounts are capped at $299.99 per week total. If you have hit this limit, verify your identity to raise it.

  2. Verify your identity to remove the sending restriction.

Tap Me → Settings → Identity Verification. You need your legal name, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your SSN. Verification usually completes within minutes and raises limits significantly.

  3. Check for any account warnings or banners in the app.

If your account has been restricted, Venmo shows a banner or message when you open the app. Tap the message for details — it usually explains what action is required.

  4. Make sure your linked payment method is still valid.

Tap Me → Payment Methods. If your linked bank or card shows an error or has been removed, add a new payment method before sending.

  5. Contact Venmo support if your account is frozen.

Go to the Venmo Help Centre (help.venmo.com) and submit a support ticket. Frozen accounts usually require identity verification or a review — it can take 1-3 business days.

Can Venmo permanently ban you from sending?

Yes. Repeated violations of Venmo's user agreement — including prohibited transactions, chargebacks, or fraud — can result in a permanent account closure. Venmo's terms of service list the activities that lead to permanent bans.
