Transfer Failed

Venmo Payment App

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Venmo transfer failure means money could not be moved between your Venmo balance and your bank account. This is different from a payment failure — it involves your bank account directly. Most transfer failures are caused by bank account issues or Venmo transfer limits.

Affected Models

  • Venmo for iOS
  • Venmo for Android
  • Venmo web (venmo.com)

Common Causes

  • Bank account not properly verified in Venmo
  • Bank account closed or number changed since it was linked
  • Transfer amount exceeds your Venmo transfer limit
  • Bank is temporarily rejecting ACH transfers from Venmo
  • Venmo account flagged for unusual activity — transfers temporarily blocked

How to Fix It

  1. Check the bank account linked to Venmo is still active and the account number has not changed.

If your bank issued a new account number for any reason, Venmo is still trying to send to the old one.

  2. In Venmo, go to Settings > Payment Methods and remove then re-add your bank account.

Re-adding the bank account forces a fresh verification and updates any changed account details.

  3. Check whether you are trying to transfer more than your current limit allows. Standard transfers have a $999.99 per week limit for verified accounts.

Transfer limits are separate from payment limits. Even fully verified accounts have a weekly cap on bank transfers.

  4. Try an Instant Transfer instead of a standard bank transfer — select Instant when choosing transfer speed.

Instant transfers use a debit card rather than ACH and often succeed when standard bank transfers fail. Note there is a small fee for instant transfers.

  5. If transfers keep failing, contact your bank and ask whether they are blocking incoming ACH transfers from Venmo.

Some banks have become more restrictive about P2P app transfers. A single call to your bank usually resolves this permanently.

When to Call a Professional

Most transfer failures are fixable by re-linking your bank account. If your bank keeps rejecting transfers, call them directly and ask about ACH transfer restrictions. Venmo support can help if your account has been flagged.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a failed transfer take to reverse?

If no money moved, there is nothing to reverse. If a pending hold appeared on your bank statement, it will drop off within 1-3 business days. Venmo does not keep money from a failed transfer.

Standard transfer vs instant transfer — what is the difference?

Standard transfers are free and take 1-3 business days via ACH bank transfer. Instant transfers cost 1.75% (minimum $0.25) and arrive within 30 minutes via debit card. Instant transfers are more reliable when standard transfers keep failing.

My transfer was pending for 3 days and then failed — why?

ACH transfers can be rejected by the receiving bank up to 3 days after initiation. This usually means the bank rejected the transfer after initially accepting it. Re-linking the bank account and trying again typically fixes it.
