Group Chat Not Working

WhatsApp WhatsApp

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

If you can't send messages in a WhatsApp group, the group admin may have restricted sending to admins only. You may also have been removed from the group. Checking the group info screen tells you immediately which situation you're in.

Affected Models

  • WhatsApp on Android
  • WhatsApp on iPhone
  • WhatsApp on Windows
  • WhatsApp Web

Common Causes

  • Group admin has set it so only admins can send messages
  • You have been removed from the group by an admin
  • The group has been archived — it appears hidden
  • WhatsApp connection issue preventing messages from sending
  • The group has reached its maximum size limit (1,024 members)

How to Fix It

  1. Open the group and check if it says 'Only admins can send messages'.

This message appears at the bottom of the chat instead of the text box. If you see it, only admins can post in this group.

  2. Ask a group admin to give you permission to send messages.

An admin can go to Group Info > Edit Group Settings > Send Messages > change it to 'All participants'.

  3. Check if you've been removed from the group.

If you've been removed, you'll see a message in the chat: 'You were removed.' You can no longer send messages in that group.

  4. Check if the group has been archived.

Archived groups are hidden from the main chat list. On Android, scroll to the bottom or tap Archived. On iPhone, swipe down on the chat list.

  5. Check your internet connection.

If the group isn't loading at all (blank or spinning), the issue may be your connection. Try restarting WhatsApp or your phone.

When to Call a Professional

If groups consistently fail to load and your connection is fine, contact WhatsApp support. Go to Settings > Help > Contact Us inside the WhatsApp app.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the WhatsApp group size limit?

WhatsApp groups can have up to 1,024 members. If the group is at the limit, no new members can be added. The group will still function normally for existing members.

Can I rejoin a WhatsApp group after being removed?

You can only rejoin if a group admin invites or adds you back. You cannot add yourself back to a group you were removed from. If you left voluntarily, any group member can add you back (unless the admin has restricted this).

How do I know if I've been removed from a WhatsApp group?

You'll see a notice in the group chat: 'You were removed from this group'. You can still read the old messages, but the text box will be gone. You also won't receive any new messages from the group after being removed.
