Status Not Uploading
WhatsApp WhatsApp
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
WhatsApp Status upload failures are usually caused by a slow connection or a video that's too long. Status videos have a 30-second limit per clip. Switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa) often unsticks the upload.
Affected Models
- WhatsApp on Android
- WhatsApp on iPhone
- WhatsApp on older devices
Common Causes
- Slow or unstable internet connection
- Video file is too large or too long (max 30 seconds per status clip)
- Unsupported file format
- WhatsApp servers are temporarily slow
- Phone storage is full — no room to process the upload
How to Fix It
-
Check your internet connection.
Uploading requires a stable connection. Test by sending a message or loading a webpage first.
-
Try uploading a photo instead of a video.
Photos upload much faster and require less bandwidth. If a photo posts fine, the issue is with the video size or format.
-
Shorten your video — Status clips can't exceed 30 seconds.
Use your phone's built-in video editor to trim the clip. WhatsApp will also let you trim when selecting the video.
-
Free up phone storage.
Go to Settings > Storage on your phone. If storage is nearly full, delete some files and try the upload again.
-
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
If you're on Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data and try again. If on mobile data, connect to Wi-Fi. This refreshes the network path.
-
Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
App Store or Play Store > search WhatsApp > Update. Older versions sometimes have upload bugs.
When to Call a Professional
If Status consistently fails to upload while other WhatsApp features work fine, contact WhatsApp support. Go to Settings > Help > Contact Us inside the WhatsApp app.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can a WhatsApp Status video be?
Each Status clip can be up to 30 seconds long. If your video is longer, WhatsApp will automatically split it into multiple clips. You can add up to 30 status updates per day.
Why does Status upload for some people but not others?
WhatsApp Status is posted to everyone who can see your status — the upload happens once to WhatsApp's servers. If it's stuck uploading, it hasn't reached the servers yet — so nobody can see it. The issue is always on your end (connection or file), not who you're sharing with.
Does WhatsApp Status upload use a lot of mobile data?
Photos use very little data — usually under 1 MB. Videos use more — a 30-second HD video can use 10–30 MB to upload. If you're on a limited data plan, upload Status updates over Wi-Fi when possible.
