Two-Step Verification Error

WhatsApp WhatsApp

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Two-step verification errors happen when WhatsApp asks for a 6-digit PIN you set yourself. If you've forgotten it, you can reset it through a recovery email. Without a recovery email, WhatsApp makes you wait 7 days before resetting.

Affected Models

  • WhatsApp on Android
  • WhatsApp on iPhone
  • WhatsApp after reinstall
  • WhatsApp on new device

Common Causes

  • PIN entered incorrectly — it's a 6-digit code you chose when setting up two-step verification
  • PIN has been forgotten after a long time
  • Setting up WhatsApp on a new phone — PIN is required again
  • Too many wrong attempts — a temporary lockout is active

How to Fix It

  1. Try your PIN — it's 6 digits you set yourself when enabling two-step verification.

Common choices people forget: a birthday, a favourite number, or a simple pattern like 123456. Try a few you might have used.

  2. Tap 'Forgot PIN' on the PIN entry screen.

This option appears below the PIN field after a few seconds. Tap it to start the reset process.

  3. Check the recovery email WhatsApp sends.

WhatsApp will send a reset link to the email address you registered. Check your inbox and spam folder.

  4. If you have no recovery email, wait 7 days.

WhatsApp offers a 'no email' reset after 7 days of waiting. During this time, you won't be able to use WhatsApp.

  5. After resetting, re-enable two-step verification with a new PIN.

Go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification > set a new PIN. This time, add a recovery email so you're never locked out again.

When to Call a Professional

WhatsApp support cannot bypass two-step verification on your behalf. This is a security feature — only the PIN reset process can unlock your account. If you lose access permanently, you'd need to create a new WhatsApp account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I never added a recovery email to WhatsApp?

Without a recovery email, you have to wait 7 full days before WhatsApp lets you reset the PIN. During those 7 days, you cannot use WhatsApp at all. After the reset, immediately add a recovery email so this never happens again.

How long does the two-step verification lockout last?

If you enter the wrong PIN too many times, WhatsApp locks you out temporarily. The lockout lasts a short time — usually 1 hour. After waiting, you can try again, or use Forgot PIN to start the reset process.

Will I lose my messages if I reset my two-step verification PIN?

Resetting the PIN does not delete your messages. Your chat history is stored separately from your two-step verification settings. However, if you're setting up a new device, you'll need a backup to restore old messages.
