Microphone Not Working
Zoom Zoom
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
When Zoom's microphone isn't working, others on the call can't hear you. This usually means Zoom has the wrong mic selected, or Windows is blocking it. A few setting changes will usually fix it in under two minutes.
Affected Models
- Zoom on Windows
- Zoom on Mac
- Zoom Desktop Client
Common Causes
- Microphone muted inside Zoom (the mic button is red/crossed out)
- Wrong microphone selected in Zoom's audio settings
- Windows Privacy settings are blocking Zoom from accessing the mic
- Another app (Discord, Teams, browser) has locked the microphone
- Microphone driver is outdated or corrupted
How to Fix It
-
Check the microphone button at the bottom of your Zoom meeting window.
If it shows a red line through it, you are muted. Click it once to unmute.
-
Click the small arrow next to the microphone icon and select the correct microphone.
If you have multiple microphones (built-in, USB, Bluetooth), make sure the right one is selected.
-
Go to Windows Settings > Privacy > Microphone and check that Zoom is allowed.
On Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Toggle Zoom to On.
-
Close other apps that might be using the microphone — Discord, Teams, browser tabs with video calls.
Only one app can use a microphone at a time on many Windows systems. Closing others frees it up.
-
Open Zoom Settings > Audio and click 'Test Mic' to confirm Zoom can detect your voice.
If the test bar does not move when you speak, the driver may need updating via Device Manager.
When to Call a Professional
If your mic works in all other apps but never in Zoom, your audio driver may be corrupted. An IT technician can reinstall drivers safely. Avoid third-party 'driver updater' tools — most are scams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I hear everyone but they can't hear me in Zoom?
Your speaker is working but your microphone is muted or set to the wrong device. Check the mic button in Zoom and verify the correct microphone is selected in Audio Settings.
Why does Zoom say 'no microphone detected'?
Zoom cannot find any audio input device on your system. Make sure your microphone is plugged in, then check Device Manager to confirm Windows can see it.
Why did my Zoom mic stop working after I updated Windows?
Windows updates sometimes reset app permissions, including microphone access. Go to Windows Settings > Privacy > Microphone and re-enable access for Zoom.
