Waiting for Host

Zoom Zoom

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The 'Waiting for Host' screen in Zoom means you have joined the meeting, but the host has not started it yet. You are in the Waiting Room — a virtual lobby that holds participants until the host lets them in. This is not an error. It is a deliberate security feature.

Affected Models

  • Zoom on Windows
  • Zoom on Mac
  • Zoom on Android
  • Zoom on iPhone

Common Causes

  • The host enabled the Waiting Room feature and has not yet admitted you
  • The host has not joined their own meeting yet
  • The host joined from a different device and may not see the waiting room notification
  • You joined the meeting early before the scheduled start time
  • The host is in another meeting or busy and has not checked Zoom yet

How to Fix It

  1. Simply wait. If the meeting is scheduled to start soon, the host will admit you shortly.

Hosts sometimes run a few minutes late. Give it 5–10 minutes before taking further action.

  2. Contact the host directly — by phone, text, or email — and let them know you are waiting.

The host may not have noticed the waiting room notification, especially on mobile.

  3. Check the meeting time again. Make sure you joined on the correct day and at the correct time.

If you joined 24 hours early or late due to a time zone mistake, you will wait indefinitely.

  4. If you are the meeting host yourself, make sure you are signing in with the host account — not a participant account.

Only the account that scheduled the meeting can start it as host without a password.

  5. As a host: you can disable Waiting Room for future meetings under Zoom Settings > Security to let participants join directly.

Turning off Waiting Room means participants enter immediately. Only do this for trusted groups.

When to Call a Professional

The Waiting for Host screen is not a technical issue. If you have been waiting for a long time, the best action is to contact the host directly. There is no technical fix — only the host can admit you or start the meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I wait in the Waiting Room before being let in?

There is no time limit for the Waiting Room. You will stay there until the host admits you or you leave. If you have been waiting more than 10 minutes, message the host directly.

Can I do anything while waiting in the Waiting Room?

Not much — Zoom's Waiting Room is just a holding screen. You cannot see or hear the meeting. You can send a message to the host if the host has enabled that feature.

I am the host but still see 'Waiting for Host'. Why?

This happens if you joined using a participant link instead of your host account. Sign out of Zoom, then sign back in with your host account. Alternatively, you can reclaim the host role by entering the host key during the meeting.
