Your Internet Connection is Unstable
Zoom Zoom
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Zoom shows 'Your internet connection is unstable' when your internet speed or quality is not good enough to maintain a consistent video call. Zoom constantly monitors your connection and shows this warning when packets are dropping or your speed dips too low. You do not need to fix Zoom — you need to improve your connection.
Affected Models
- Zoom on Windows
- Zoom on Mac
- Zoom on Android
- Zoom on iPhone
Common Causes
- You are too far from your Wi-Fi router and the signal is weak
- Many devices on your network are using bandwidth at the same time
- Your internet package has a slow upload speed, which Zoom depends on heavily
- A background app (like cloud backup or file downloads) is consuming your bandwidth
- Your internet service is having a temporary slow period or outage in your area
How to Fix It
-
Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or connect your computer directly to the router with an ethernet cable.
A wired connection is always faster and more stable than Wi-Fi for video calls.
-
Close any apps that use the internet in the background — streaming services, cloud backup, file downloads.
Even a single background download can cut your available bandwidth significantly.
-
Lower Zoom's video quality. In Zoom settings, go to Video and disable HD video.
Lowering video quality reduces bandwidth requirements by up to 50% and usually stops the warning.
-
Turn off your camera and use audio only. Press the Stop Video button in the call.
Video uses far more bandwidth than audio. Audio-only calls work well even on slow connections.
-
Run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net. Zoom needs at least 1.5 Mbps upload for a stable video call.
If your upload speed is below 1 Mbps, contact your ISP or switch to a better connection.
When to Call a Professional
This warning does not require a technician unless your internet is always slow. If you consistently have poor speeds, contact your internet service provider. They can run a line test and may be able to improve your service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Zoom say my connection is unstable when I have fast internet?
Fast download speed is not the whole story. Zoom relies heavily on upload speed and low latency. A connection can have fast downloads but poor upload speed, or high latency (lag), which causes instability. Run a speed test and check your upload and ping numbers.
Will turning off my camera really help?
Significantly. Video streaming uses 3–5x more bandwidth than audio alone. If your connection is marginal, turning off your camera can make the call stable immediately.
Other apps work fine, but Zoom always says my connection is unstable. Why?
Video calls are much more demanding than browsing or email. Spotify needs about 0.3 Mbps. Zoom needs 1.5 Mbps or more. Your connection may be fine for light use but not strong enough for video conferencing.
