Communication Error
Enphase Microinverter
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Enphase communication error means the Envoy cannot reach one or more microinverters on the powerline network, or the Envoy itself cannot connect to the Enlighten cloud. Microinverters continue producing power even when communication is lost — only monitoring is affected. Most communication errors resolve with a powerline reset or Envoy reboot.
Affected Models
- Enphase Envoy-S Metered
- Enphase Envoy-S Standard
- Enphase IQ Envoy
- Enphase IQ Gateway
- Enphase IQ Combiner
Common Causes
- Envoy lost connection to the home Wi-Fi or the Enlighten cloud servers
- Powerline communication interference from appliances on the same circuit — power strips with filtering, UPS units, or plasma TVs
- Microinverter on a different electrical phase than the Envoy — signal does not cross phases without a signal bridge
- Envoy firmware update in progress — temporarily stops communication
- Power line noise from LED dimmers, variable-speed motors, or switching power supplies
How to Fix It
-
Reboot the Envoy.
Unplug the Envoy power supply from the wall outlet. Wait 60 seconds. Plug it back in. The Envoy takes approximately 10 minutes to fully boot and re-establish communication with all microinverters. Check Enlighten after 20 minutes.
-
Check the Envoy's Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
The Envoy LEDs show network status: a solid green network LED means it is connected to Enlighten. If the network LED is off or flashing, the Envoy cannot reach the internet. Reboot your router and check the Envoy's network settings via its local web page at enlighten.local or its IP address.
-
Remove powerline interference sources.
Plug the Envoy directly into a wall outlet — not a power strip, UPS, or surge protector. These devices often include filtering that blocks the powerline signal the Envoy uses to communicate with microinverters. This is a common cause of intermittent communication loss.
-
Check whether missing microinverters are on a different electrical phase.
Enphase powerline communication does not cross electrical phases without a phase coupler. If panels were installed on two separate phases of a split-phase system and some microinverters are consistently unreachable, a phase coupler (part number ENV-PHASE-COUPLER) is required.
When to Call a Professional
If more than 25% of microinverters are missing from Enlighten and a powerline reset does not restore them, your installer should check whether a phase coupler is installed and whether the Envoy is on the correct circuit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are my panels still producing power when the Envoy shows a communication error?
Yes. The microinverters operate independently of the Envoy. A communication error means you cannot see production data in Enlighten, but the panels are still generating power and sending it to your home and grid.
How long can the Envoy store production data without an internet connection?
The Envoy caches up to 7 days of production data locally. Once internet connectivity is restored, it uploads the cached data to Enlighten. You will not lose historical production data for short outages.
