IQ Battery Not Charging
Enphase Home Battery
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Enphase IQ Battery not charging usually means the system is in Self-Consumption mode with the state-of-charge already at 100%, the battery is in reserve, or the Envoy has lost communication with the storage unit. Check the Enlighten app for the current battery status and any active alerts on the storage device.
Affected Models
- Enphase IQ Battery 3
- Enphase IQ Battery 10
- Enphase Encharge 3
- Enphase Encharge 10
- Enphase IQ Battery 5P
Common Causes
- Battery already at 100% state of charge — will not charge further
- Battery in Storm Guard or Savings Mode with reserve threshold set high
- Envoy lost communication with the IQ Battery — shows as 'not communicating' in Enlighten
- Grid export limit set to zero preventing solar from charging the battery
- IQ Battery firmware update in progress — charging paused temporarily
- CT clamp (current transformer) measuring solar production incorrectly
How to Fix It
-
Check the current state of charge in the Enlighten app.
Open Enlighten → Home → Storage. If the battery shows 100% SOC, it is full and will begin discharging before charging again. If it shows a low SOC and still is not charging, proceed with the steps below.
-
Check the battery mode and reserve settings.
In the Enlighten app, go to Profile → Storage settings. If the mode is set to Self-Sufficiency or Savings, check the reserve percentage. A reserve set to 80% means 80% of capacity is held for outages and only 20% is available for normal charging cycles.
-
Reboot the Envoy.
The Envoy is the hub that communicates with the IQ Battery. Power cycle it by unplugging the Envoy power supply, waiting 60 seconds, then plugging it back in. The Envoy takes about 10 minutes to fully reconnect and re-establish communication with the battery.
-
Check for Enphase system alerts in Enlighten.
Log in to enlightenmanager.enphaseenergy.com or the Enlighten app. Check the Alerts tab for any active events on the IQ Battery or Enpower switch. Error codes or communication alerts here indicate the specific cause.
-
Verify the Enpower smart switch is closed.
The Enpower switch controls grid connection and charging. If it shows as 'open' or 'unknown' in Enlighten, the battery cannot receive charge from the grid. Contact your installer — the Enpower switch may need a reset or firmware update.
When to Call a Professional
If the IQ Battery shows as 'not communicating' in Enlighten for more than 24 hours or the Enpower switch status is unknown, contact your Enphase installer for a site inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Enphase IQ Battery stop charging after noon?
In Self-Consumption mode, the battery charges from excess solar production in the morning. Once full, it stops charging and begins discharging to cover home loads in the afternoon. This is normal operation.
Can the Enphase IQ Battery charge from the grid?
Yes, in Time-of-Use or Savings Mode, the battery can charge from the grid during off-peak rate periods. This requires the correct mode to be selected in the Enlighten app and the Enpower switch to be functioning.
